Former NBA player Jerome Whitehead found dead

Jerome Whitehead, who stared in college at Marquette and went on to have a 12-year NBA career, has died.

He was found dead in his home in El Cajon, Calif;, (near San Diego) back on Dec. 20, reports the Chicago Tribune and multiple other outlets. He was discovered by his sister and apparently had been passed away for a little while, according to the report.

An autopsy found that Whitehead had died from a gastrointestinal hemorrhage related to chronic alcohol abuse, an investigator at the examiner?s office said.

Whitehead was a 6?10 center (and occasional forward) who was drafted in the second round of the 1978 draft by the then San Diego Clippers and went on to play for Utah, Dallas, Golden State and San Antonio. He averaged 6.5 points and 4.8 rebounds a game. In the 1981-82 season he averaged 13.8 points a game for the San Diego Clippers.

Whitehead was a key part of Marquette?s 1977 national championship team.

Texas vs. Oregon State: Twitter Reaction, Postgame Recap and Analysis

The Texas Longhorns dominated the second half of the 2012 Valero Alamo Bowl to take down the Oregon State Beavers, 31-27, in San Antonio Saturday night.?

The Longhorns came back from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit in what was truly a tale of two halves, and did not hold a lead in this game until there was just over two minutes remaining.?

The two teams traded field goals to start off the scoring and the Beavers received the first touchdown of the game on a carry by Storm Woods, who was the star of the first half, as the Beavers relied almost exclusively on the run to control the game.

Oregon state dominated the game in the first half in a way not quite accurately depicted by their 20-10 lead. The Longhorns simply could get nothing going on offense, with one notable exception.?

Wide receiver and U.S. Olympian long-jumper Marquise Goodwin got the ball on a reverse early in the second quarter and found a lot of open turf in front of him. He was a blur as he raced 64 yards for a touchdown and leveled the score at 10.

Oregon State stuffed the Texas offense and scored the final 10 points of the second quarter, but they should have been leading by more. Failures in the passing game were costing them. Quarterback Cody Vaz chucked an interception on his first pass attempt and wound up with three turnovers on the game.?

Vaz tweaked an ankle injury in the second quarter and missed significant time, but backup Sean Mannion did not attempt a single pass filling in for Vaz.?

All of this action led to a second half where neither team could be feeling particularly good about themselves. However, Texas was clearly?rejuvenated?by not being down by a greater deficit.?

The Beavers, meanwhile, got away from the rushing attack that was very successful in the first half. It didn't help that they lost Storm Woods to an injury, but the switch in strategy was shocking and not at all effective.?

All of this allowed Texas to pin their ears back and rush the passer. With Alex Okafor leading the way, the Longhorns pass rush began to take over. Okafor (more on him later) was unstoppable. ?

Still, the two sides each scored a touchdown in the third to enter the fourth with the Beavers leading 27-17. But Texas closed the gap with a 15-yard touchdown pass by David Ash with just over eight minutes remaining to pull within three points.?

The Texas defense held strong and quickly got its offense the ball back with with 4:35 left.?The offense was left with excellent field position, but was quickly facing a 4th-and-1 with around three minutes left on the Beavers 40.

They picked it up with a run, and on the very next play David Ash went deep and found Goodwin wide open in the end zone for the go-ahead score with just 2:24 left in the game.?

That was no problem for Mack Brown's defense. It used its momentum and dominance in the pass rush to quickly seal the deal.?

?

Twitter Reaction

BigLeadSports' Jason McIntyre tweeted out his astonishment over Texas' early failures in stopping the run.?

That tweet came early in the game and Woods got off to a fast start. He had six carries for 45 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter.

It wasn't all doom and gloom for the Longhorns in the first half, however:

Still, nothing tells the tale of the first half better than this tweet by ESPN's Carter Strickland.

We mentioned Okafor above, and for good reason. This future NFLer had himself a game...and a season. Texas Football tweeted this gem.?

Okafor certainly emerged as one of the stars from this game, and he also earned himself a spot in the the Alamo Bowl record books. The game's official Twitter feed?passed?this along.?

Okafor wound up getting the record all to his lonesome as he recorded a huge sack on 3rd-and-8 with under two minutes left, and he was a huge reason why Texas wound up getting a sack on the ensuing fourth-down play.?

While this was a fun and entertaining game, you can't help but wonder why Oregon State got away from the running game in the second half. The Oregonian's John Hunt?highlights that with this clever tweet.?

The Alamo Bowl rarely disappoints, and this year was certainly no different.?

RolePlayGateway?

Looking to see if anyone is interested in a OnexOne roleplay set into the future. I'm looking for someone who is creative enough to keep the RP alive and is a more advanced writer. Looking for a female character.

Here's a short little overview:

New Tokyo, Japan || Year 2113

Throughout the years Japan has managed to brutally shape itself into the country it is today, its history littered with blood, tears, and deceptions that lay buried underneath the rubble of old cities, old lives, and even older traditions. Technology advances and the people along with it, governments fall and new powers take over. Humans are constantly in motion, adapting without realizing they?ve lost the control over their own lives. Japan was no different than the rest. It wasn?t until after the third great war of 2062 that Japan came cracking down on its citizens, empowering police forces with more power than was deserved- power that easily corrupted and took over. Things changed, more laws were passed and the power to the people became almost nonexistent. A.W.O [Armortech Warfare Organization] was the economic powerhouse that fixed Japan from its slump after the war. A.W.O became law. And with new laws, came law breakers.

The first anti-A.W.O group was known as The Resistance. In the beginning they had been made up of a small group of maybe 30 individuals who were infamous for their violent acts of protests, which often included flooding the streets with riots, vandalism, and other small scale crimes that A.W.O took with a grain of salt. The Resistance was nothing but a band of thugs at first, they were careless, stupid, and nothing that A.W.O officers couldn't handle. The Resistance and its members had slowly begun to get picked off one by one, A.W.O was written all over the 'mysterious' deaths. They would have been completely wiped out if it wasn't for their sudden change in leadership. Akito Higurashi, Codename: Ocean. The rumors were that he had transferred from The Underground, an elite group that was so low profile that it was almost a myth.

In a matter of months, Ocean became one of the most infamous names known to A.W.O - It was no suprise that all information on him was hidden from the public and stored away in a document labled 'Top Secret'. He became the most wanted man in all of Japan, but nobody knew who he was.

Not yet.

So basically, the plot of the entire story will be that Ocean will be captured and held in an A.W.O holding facility until further questioning. Prior to his capture, an A.W.O special operative will be diagnosed with a disease that has a 80% rate of being fatal and killing the patient within months of being diagnosed. This special operative will then kind of go over the deep end and eventually let Ocean free as long as he promises to take her with him because she wants to live the rest of her life breaking the rules since she has always been one to follow them. Then their adventure begins and they go through all sorts of crazy obstacles and most likely will turn into a romance.

Here is another overview of the events that took place before Ocean's capture:

Ocean (My Character)

Neon signs flickered on and off in a struggle to stay alive, their dim light being the only source of illumination in the dilapidated and dark alley way. An overcast of thick fog hung over the tops of the nearly abandoned buildings, the smoke seeming to crawl down the sides of the old apartments and motels, until it touched the streets where it lingered like a ghost. In an almost dead part of town, four armor clad shadows stood near the outskirts of an apartment, so still that they could have be mistaken for statues if it weren?t for the faint rise and fall of their chests and the shift of lids over eyes that scanned every crack and crevice on the building in front of them.

They were waiting, waiting for a sign that what they have been looking for was in that building, waiting for a movement- a pulse. White noise changed to static in the headphones they all wore before a voice broke through, alerting them to the task at hand.

?He?s there.?

Not one hesitated as they sprung into action, years of training making them the fastest and the most battle ready. Feet shuffled and the sound of metal armor scraping against itself could be heard against the silence of the night, no doubt alerting the target inside. The head of command laid one swift kick to the apartment door, the hinges giving way at the powerful blow. They stormed in with a fury, weapons in hand and locked on the target that sat smirking almost idly on a ripped and torn couch at the corner of the room.

Weapons clicked into place. ?Target 5470D, confirmed.?

The A.W.O Operative (Female Character)

There was barely a sound in the polished office, save for the ocasional click of a pen and the rustling of paperwork. The restless silence hung down like lead, but it was soon interrupted by quick steps in the hallway just outside, and a young woman pushing through the heavy oak doors into the large room. Dressed in regulation military fatigues for respite, a faint blue light glowed through her white tank top all along her spine.

"First Lieutenant _____." she saluted briefly, "You wanted to see me, Major General, sir?"

"At ease." the man at the desk rolled his eyes at the feigned politeness, remaining slouched in his desk chair, staring over at the young woman pensively, "They're making you Captain, kiddo," he finally stated, "That stunt you pulled, managing to find Ocean, impressed them to the shits."

"I didn't do anything," the young woman grumbled, shoving her hands into the pockets of her cameo pockets and shrugging her shoulders absently, "Bain's unit captured him."

The General snorted, "Bain couldn't find his hand at the end of his arm, let alone a needle in a haystack."

The young woman shrugged again, earning herself a glare from the older man, "Look, kid, point is, you're going to shut up, get over your issues, work with a team, and for god's sake, you'll try to smile when they hand you your new insignia."

A twitch appeared at the corner of the newly appointed Captain's mouth, and her lips curled into a semblance of a grin, looking more like she was baring her teeth than anything else.

"Is that all, sir?" she huffed.

"Yea," the General sighed, "Well, no. Your doc's here."

The young woman narrowed her eyes, but did not protest (verbally anyway) and merely watched with undisguised hostility as a man in a white lab coat joined them in the office.

It really was too bad, she briefly thought, as she might have liked the man, if he didn't have the nasty habit of sticking sharp objects into her automail of a spinal chord with alarming frequency.

"I'm not due for a fitting for another two weeks," she stated suspiciously.
The two men shared uncomfortable glances, and the doctor finally broke the newfound silence, clearing his throat and gesturing for the young woman to have a seat. She shook her head, causing a grimace to stretch the young doctor's lips.

"Well, you see miss..." he began, interrupted at once by a lifted palm, "/Captain/," the girl rectified with a raised eyebrow, daring him to continue.

"Very well, Captain, I've had time to look over your scans from last week, and I'm afraid I have some bad news..."

The rest of the speech seemed drowned out by the blood rushing through the Captain's ears. She heard words like fatal, terminal, organ failure, but they meant nothing to her. Death? Was this rat of a man was rambling on about now? She was going to die? Well, of course, she had always expected to die. But certainly not now. Certainly not like this. Certainly not slowly and agonizingly for no good cause at all.

Through the haze, she caught on the gist of the problem: the surgery from two years prior had been an innovation. She had been lucky enough to get out of it on her own two feet. Her spinal chord had been so badly damaged, that the surgeons had been forced to either give up, or attempt a graft.

She had been given the spinal chord of a dead comrade, to replace the nerves endings crushed beneath the broken bones. A series of automail pieces running on isotopic technology had served as replacement for the bone themselves.

And now, it appeared that the graft was taking over her own nervous system. It certainly explained the so-called 'antibiotics' she had been forced to ingest daily. Those, she now learned, had held back the graft's progress, but her body and its foreign object had both grown accustomed and impervious to them, building a high tolerance for the now-useless medicine.

The graft would slowly gain control over her entire body, and, combined with an unaccesible (and therefore unrepairable) leak in her automail, she was guaranteed a drawn-out and painful death, poisoned by the very thing that had saved her life.

Well, drawn out was relative. Three months, the doctor said. A few more if she came to the hospital with them. A few less if she stubbornly continued to out-do herself. They could make it painless for her, they said. Medication and painkillers and a soft bed. No more work. She was promoted. She could enjoy the raise, yelling at new recruits and generally taking things easy.

It all felt a bit too much like pity to her. Painless? Sit behind a desk? The young women clenched her fists as she nodded blindly, no longer listening. Screw that. She was going down with a fight, on the field, out there, doing... doing something, though she didn't quite know what.

She'd figure it out.

She had three months.

So yeah! If you are interested please let me know.
Also, I'm really new to this site so I am still getting used to how everything works.

Small Talk: 5 issues small-business owners will face in 2013 | The ...

John Arensmeyer, CEO of Small Business Majority, an advocacy group for small business owners, poses for a portrait at the Small Business Majority office in Washington, on Wednesday, July 11, 2012. Health care has been another source of uncertainty for small business owners. The new year will bring some, but probably not all, of the answers to questions about how the new health care law will affect them."They'll have to get their arms around the law, look at their options, learn more about the exchanges," says Arensmeyer. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)

In 2013, small-business owners will contend with many of the same issues that made it hard to run their companies over the last 12 months.

They?re also heading into the new year with a lot of uncertainty. It?s unlikely that negotiations in Congress will resolve all of lawmakers? disagreements over tax and budget issues that affect small businesses. And there are still many questions about the implications of the health care law for small companies.

That points to continued caution ? and perhaps slow hiring ? among the nation?s small companies.

"Uncertainty is the bane of every small business," says Scott Shane, a professor of entrepreneurship at Case Western Reserve University?s Weatherhead School of Management in Cleveland. "Their only rational response is to pull in their horns and slow down."

Small businesses aren?t likely to get much encouragement from the economy. It?s expected to grow by no more than 3 percent in 2013, according to the Federal Reserve. That?s a moderate pace, better than the 1.7 percent that the economy grew during the first three quarters of 2012. But it?s also far from robust.

Here?s a look at some of the issues facing small businesses in the coming year:

?

Taxes

Lawmakers are still haggling over what?s called the fiscal cliff, the combination of billions of dollars in tax increases and budget cuts. Even if Congress reaches an agreement, small-business owners won?t have the certainty they need, according to Todd McCracken, president of the National Small Business Association, a group that lobbies on behalf of small companies.

"It almost surely won?t be comprehensive enough that we won?t be revisiting it next year," McCracken says. He?s concerned that there?ll be another fiscal cliff in six months ? which would mean more negotiations and more uncertainty.

story continues below

Many small-business owners are worried about their personal tax rates. Sole proprietors, partners and owners of what are called S corporations, all report the income from their businesses on their individual Form 1040 returns. That means their companies are in effect taxed at personal rates, which can be higher than corporate rates.

One of the most important tax provisions for small businesses, the Section 179 deduction, will shrink to $25,000 next year from $125,000 in 2012. The deduction, which applies to equipment purchases, was $500,000 in 2011. Congress can increase the deduction at any time, even after 2013 has begun. But for the time being, business owners can?t count on getting a big break.

"It?s a huge change for companies planning on making investments," McCracken says.

It?s not known if Congress will extend the 2 percentage point payroll tax cut that workers have had for two years. If it doesn?t, consumers will have less money in their paychecks to spend, and that is likely to affect retailers and any other small businesses that sell directly to the public.

?

Health care

Health care has been another source of uncertainty for small-business owners. The new year will bring some, but probably not all, of the answers to questions about how the new health care law will affect them. Many will have to devote some time to understanding the law ? or hire someone to help them do it.

Oil prices rise ahead of US fiscal-cliff talks

BANGKOK (AP) ? The price of crude rose Friday, following stock markets in Asia higher hours ahead of a last-ditch effort in Washington for political leaders to strike a budget deal before the year-end deadline.

Benchmark crude for February delivery rose 40 cents midday Bangkok time to $91.27 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The contract fell Thursday following a reported drop in U.S. consumer confidence and growing pessimism that President Barack Obama and Republican lawmakers will reach a compromise on ways to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff ? hundreds of billions of dollars in government spending cuts and tax increases that take effect automatically in 2013 unless lawmakers act.

Hopes that a compromise might be reached were raised after Obama, who cut his Hawaii vacation short, invited congressional leaders to the White House for talks Friday.

In other energy futures trading:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 1.2 cents to $2.8334 a gallon.

? Brent crude, used to price various kinds of foreign oil, rose 48 cents to $111.28 per barrel in London.

? Heating oil rose 0.3 cent to $3.0522 a gallon.

? Natural gas lost 1.3 cents to $3.399 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Reid: U.S. is poised to go off fiscal cliff

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (R) (D-NV) hugs Speaker of the House John Boehner as Senate Minority Leader Mitch??With a deal to avert the so-called "fiscal cliff" nowhere in sight, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Thursday predicted a compromise would not be reached in time to avert the tax increases and automatic spending cuts set to be triggered on January 1. Reid also criticized Republican House Speaker John Boehner in unusually personal terms, accusing him of running the House as a ?dictatorship? and blasting him for letting lawmakers out for vacation.

Boehner will be to blame ?if we go over the cliff, and it looks like that?s where we?re headed,? Reid insisted as the Senate returned to work for a post-Christmas session focused on disaster relief for Sandy victims and renewing key government surveillance powers.

Reid's speech on the Senate floor came shortly before President Barack Obama returned to Washington from Hawaii to resume discussions of how to avoid the fiscal cliff. White House Spokesman Dan Pfeiffer said Obama had spoken to Reid, Boehner, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell Wednesday evening.

Reid, a Nevada Democrat, repeatedly pressed Boehner to have the House take up a Senate-passed bill extending income tax cuts on income under $250,000, calling that measure the only ?viable escape route.? House Republicans have thus far balked at raising taxes at all.

?The Speaker just has a few days left to change his mind,? Reid said. ?But I have to be very honest?I don?t know, time-wise, how it can happen now.?

"Speaker Boehner should call members of the House back today," Reid said, adding that the Ohio Republican "seems to care more about keeping his speakership" than pushing his party to accept a deal that would avert a tax increase for all but the highest income taxpayers. Democrats have repeatedly leveled that charge at Boehner, whose reelection on January 3 is not seriously in doubt despite ever-louder conservative grumbling.

Reid also accused Boehner of operating a "dictatorship" that had shut out House Democrats and all but the most conservative voices in the GOP, saying that the Senate-passed bill would pass with mostly Democratic votes but some Republican support as well.

?Nothing can move forward in regards to our budget crisis unless Speaker Boehner and Leader McConnell are willing to participate in coming up with a bipartisan plan,? Reid warned. ?Speaker Boehner is unwilling to negotiate, we?ve not heard a word from Leader McConnell, nothing is happening. Democrats can?t put together a plan on their own,? he said.

Obama invites congressional leaders to cliff talk

(AP Photo/ Evan Vucci)

(AP) ? A deadline looming, President Barack Obama will meet with congressional leaders at the White House on Friday in search of a compromise to avoid a year-end "fiscal cliff" of across-the-board tax increases and deep spending cuts.

The development capped a day of growing urgency in which Obama returned early from a Hawaiian vacation while lawmakers snarled across a partisan divide over responsibility for gridlock on key pocketbook issues. Speaker John Boehner called the House back into session for a highly unusual Sunday evening session.

Adding to the woes confronting the middle class was a pending spike of $2 per gallon or more in milk prices if lawmakers failed to pass farm legislation by year's end.

Four days before the deadline, the White House disputed reports that Obama was sending lawmakers a scaled-down plan to avoid the fiscal cliff of tax increases and spending cuts.

Administration officials confirmed the Friday meeting at the White House in a bare-bones announcement that said the president would "host a meeting."

An aide to Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said the Kentucky lawmaker "is eager to hear from the president."

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner issued a statement that said the Ohio Republican would attend and "continue to stress that the House has already passed legislation to avert the entire fiscal cliff and now the Senate must act."

While there was no guarantee of a compromise, Republicans and Democrats said privately elements of any agreement would likely include an extension of middle class tax cuts with increased rates at upper incomes as well as cancellation of the scheduled spending cuts. An extension of expiring unemployment benefits, a reprieve for doctors who face a cut in Medicare payments and possibly a short-term measure to prevent dairy prices from soaring could also become part of a year-end bill, they said.

That would postpone politically contentious disputes over spending cuts for 2013.

Top Senate leaders said they remain ready to seek a last-minute agreement. Yet there was no legislation pending and no sign of negotiations in either the House or the Senate on a bill to prevent the tax hikes and spending cuts that economists say could send the economy into a recession.

Far from conciliatory, the rhetoric was confrontational and at times unusually personal.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused Boehner of running a dictatorship, citing his refusal to call a vote on legislation to keep taxes steady for most while letting them rise at upper incomes. The bill "would pass overwhelmingly," Reid predicted, and said the Ohio Republican won't change his mind because he fears it might cost him re-election as speaker when the new Congress convenes next week.

Boehner seems "to care more about keeping his speakership than keeping the nation on a firm financial footing," he said in remarks on the Senate floor.

A few hours later, McConnell expressed frustration and blamed the standoff on Obama and the Democrats. "Republicans have bent over backwards. We stepped way, way out of our comfort zone," he said, referring to GOP offers to accept higher tax rates on some taxpayers.

"We wanted an agreement, but we had no takers. The phone never rang, and so here we are five days from the new year and we might finally start talking," McConnell said.

Still, he warned: "Republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything the Democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff."

Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Boehner, responded in a similar vein to Reid's comments. "Harry Reid should talk less and legislate more if he wants to avert the fiscal cliff. The House has already passed legislation to do so," he said, referring to a measure that extends existing cuts at all income levels.

Addressing the GOP rank and file by conference call, Boehner said the next move is up to the Senate, which has yet to act on House-passed bills to retain expiring tax cuts at all income levels and replace across-the-board spending cuts with targeted savings aimed largely at social programs.

"The House will take this action on whatever the Senate can pass - but the Senate must act," he said, according to a participant in the call.

Boehner told Republican lawmakers the House would convene on Sunday evening. Majority Leader Eric Cantor said the House could be in session until Jan. 2, the day before the new congress is sworn in.

The risk of higher milk prices stems from the possibility that existing farm programs will expire at year's end, and neither chamber of Congress has scheduled a vote on even a temporary extension to prevent a spike. There have been unverified estimates that the cost to consumers of a gallon of milk could double without action by Congress.

The president flew home from Hawaii overnight after speaking with top congressional leaders.

Before leaving the White House last Friday, the president had called on lawmakers to pass scaled-down legislation that prevents tax increases for the middle class, raises rates at upper incomes and renews expiring unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless. He said he still supports a more sweeping measure to include spending cuts to reduce deficits, but said they could wait until the new year.

That capped an unpredictable week in which Boehner pivoted away from comprehensive deficit reduction talks with Obama to an aborted attempt to push legislation through the House that retained existing tax levels except above $1 million. Anti-tax Republicans rebelled at raising rates on million-dollar earners, and Boehner backpedaled and canceled the planned vote.

Without congressional action, current tax rates will expire on Dec. 31, resulting in a $536 billion tax increase over a decade that would touch nearly all Americans. In addition, the military and other federal departments would have to begin absorbing about $110 billion in spending cuts.

Failure to avoid the "fiscal cliff" doesn't necessarily mean tax increases and spending cuts would become permanent, since the new Congress could pass legislation cancelling them retroactively after it begins its work next year.

But gridlock through the end of the year would mark a sour beginning to a two-year extension of divided government that resulted from last month's elections in which Obama won a new term and Republicans retained their majority in the House.

The tax issue in particular has been Obama's first test of muscle after his re-election in November. He ran for a new term calling for higher taxes on the wealthy, and postelection public opinion polls show continued support for his position.

Boehner's decision to support higher rates on million-dollar earners marked a significant break with long-standing GOP orthodoxy, but the resistance among his rank and file so far has trumped him as well as any mandate the president claims.

(AP) ? Large, noisy demonstrations against Iraq's government flared for the third time in less than a week Wednesday in Iraq's western Anbar province, raising the prospect of a fresh bout of unrest in a onetime al-Qaida stronghold on Syria's doorstep.

The rallies find echoes in the Arab Spring. Protesters chanted "the people want the downfall of the regime," a slogan that has rippled across the region and was fulfilled in Tunisia and Egypt. Other rallying cries blasted Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government as illegitimate and warned that protesters "will cut off any hand that touches us."

While the demonstrators' tenacious show of force could signal the start of a more populist Sunni opposition movement, it risks widening the deep and increasingly bitter rifts with the Shiite-led government in Baghdad. If left unresolved, those disputes could lead to a new eruption of sectarian violence.

The car bombings and other indiscriminate attacks that still plague Iraq are primarily the work of Sunni extremists. Vast Anbar province was once the heart of the deadly Sunni insurgency that emerged after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, and later the birthplace of a Sunni militia that helped American and Iraqi forces fight al-Qaida.

Today, al-Qaida is believed to be rebuilding in pockets of Anbar, and militants linked to it are thought to be helping Sunni rebels try to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The demonstrations follow the arrest last week of 10 bodyguards assigned to Finance Minister Rafia al-Issawi, who comes from Anbar and is one of the central government's most senior Sunni officials. He appeared before Wednesday's rally and was held aloft by the crowds.

Al-Issawi's case is exacerbating tensions between the Shiite-dominated government that rose to power following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion and Iraq's Sunnis, who see the detentions as politically motivated.

"The danger is that the revolution in Syria is perpetuating Sunni opportunism and overconfidence in Iraq," said Ramzy Mardini, an analyst at the Beirut-based Iraq Institute for Strategic Studies. "Al-Maliki may have sparked a Sunni tribal movement that will attempt to harness and capitalize on the revolutionary spirit," he said.

Protesters turned out Wednesday near the provincial capital Ramadi, 115 kilometers (70 miles) west of Baghdad. The city and nearby Fallujah were the scenes of some of the deadliest fighting between U.S. troops and Iraqi insurgents.

Demonstrators blocked the main highway linking Baghdad with neighboring Jordan and Syria, just as they did at another protest Sunday.

Wednesday's protesters held banners demanding that Sunni rights be respected and calling for the release of Sunni prisoners in Iraqi jails. "We warn the government not to draw the country into sectarian conflict," read one. Another declared: "We are not a minority."

Al-Issawi, the finance minister, addressed the rally after arriving in a long convoy of black SUVs protected by heavily armed bodyguards. He condemned last week's raid on his office and rattled off a list of grievances aimed at al-Maliki's government.

"Injustice, marginalization, discrimination and double standards, as well as the politicization of the judiciary system and a lack of respect for partnership, the law and the constitution ... have all turned our neighborhoods in Baghdad into huge prisons surrounded by concrete blocks," he declared.

Large numbers of protesters also took to the streets in Samarra, a Sunni-dominated town 60 miles (95 kilometers) north of Baghdad, according to Salahuddin provincial spokesman Mohammed al-Asi.

Many Sunnis see the arrest of the finance minister's guards as the latest in a series of moves by the Shiite prime minister against their sect and other perceived political opponents.

Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, another top-ranking Sunni politician, is now living in exile in Turkey after being handed multiple death sentences for allegedly running death squads ? a charge he dismisses as politically motivated.

Al-Maliki has defended the arrests of the finance minister's guards as legal and based on warrants issued by judicial authorities. He also recently warned against a return to sectarian strife in criticizing the responses of prominent Sunni officials to the detentions.

In a recent statement, the prime minister dismissed the rhetoric as political posturing ahead of provincial elections scheduled for April and warned his opponents not to forget the dark days of sectarian fighting "when we used to collect bodies and chopped heads from the streets."

Al-Maliki's spokesman, Ali al-Moussawi, criticized al-Issawi's participation in the protest Wednesday.

"He can't be in the government and use the street against it at the same time. If he can't shoulder his responsibilities then he has to step down so that another person can take over," he said.

The political tensions are rising at a sensitive time. Iraq's ailing President Jalal Talabani is incapacitated following a serious stroke last week and is being treated in a German hospital. The 79-year-old president, an ethnic Kurd, is widely seen as a unifying figure with the clout to mediate among the country's ethnic and sectarian groups.

Also Wednesday, the United Nations mission to Iraq said its monitors have determined that a hospital that treated a member of an Iranian exile group who died this week at a refugee camp near Baghdad did not consider his health condition serious enough to warrant hospitalization when he arrived for treatment in November.

An organization representing the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq exile group on Monday accused Iraqi authorities of preventing 56-year-old Behrooz Rahimian from being hospitalized, and alleged that the U.N. failed to take sufficient steps to intervene. Iraq considers the MEK a terrorist group and wants its members out of the country.

The U.N. mission in Baghdad said in a statement Wednesday that it "does not have any indication so far that treatment was obstructed by the Iraqi authorities." It noted that representatives for the refugee residents told U.N. monitors that Rahimian "appeared to be in good condition until the time of his death."

A home fit for a 'Cowardly' King of Beasts

5 hrs.

9555 Heather Rd, Beverly Hills, Calif.
For sale: $25.58 million

The home is at the end of a long drive, and it's paved with stone, rather than yellow brick.

Private and luxurious, the Beverly Hills estate was first built for actor Bert Lahr, best known for his role as the Cowardly Lion in "The Wizard of Oz." Lahr had just finished playing the lion when he hired architect Paul Williams to build a colonial-revival-style home.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times in the 1970s, Williams explained that Lahr wanted a cozy stone fireplace, wood paneling and "graceful entryway" that inspired a feeling of home.

"It turns out that the lion from the 'Wizard of Oz' was a wizard of design," said listing agent Joyce Rey of Coldwell Banker Previews International. "He brought in one of the most celebrated architects of the day, Paul Williams, and then added his own original touches to create a countryside home in the heart of the city. The traditional architecture brings that wonderful Hamptons, East Coast feel to Los Angeles."

Lahr wasn't the only one who was attracted the lot. After Lahr, the home passed on to a number of celebrities, including Betty Grable and husband Harry James, Paul McCartney, the Osbourne family and Melanie Griffith and ex-husband Don Johnson.

Quite a bit of star power for one home. It's the location, as well as the privacy, that attracted each of the celebrities to the property, Rey says.

And each owner put their own touch on the country estate. Originally built as a 6,000-square-foot home with 4 bedrooms for Lahr, the home now spans 12,000 square feet with 8 bedrooms and 10 baths. The wallpaper and paneling are no longer present in the home, but many of the original details Lahr envisioned are there.

Sitting on 1.3 acres behind tall gates, the Lahr estate has abundant outdoor terraces, an outdoor kitchen and dining area as well as a pool, spa, tennis court, koi pond, sports court and putting green. Inside, a vintage-style two-lane bowling alley,?game room and wet bar have been added. The living spaces are generous, with high ceilings.

The listing is shared between Rey and Marie-France Salaun.

According to current mortgage rates, a monthly payment on the home would be $88,690, assuming a 20 percent down payment on a 30-year mortgage.

Kings 90, Suns 101: Kind-Hearted Sacramento Continues its Gift Giving Tour of NBA

Santa Claus could not find kinder souls than the Sacramento Kings, who continued their streak of charitable donations to other NBA teams.

The Sacramento Kings are fully embracing the Holiday spirit this December. For the fifth straight game, Sacramento was kind enough to gift-wrap their opponents a victory. But perhaps none was as spectacular as tonight's, thanks to the surprise twist.

"You know, we wanted to do something different", center DeMarcus Cousins said after the game. "We just sort of gave those other teams the game right away. It was nice, but it didn't really feel special you know? So we knew we had to step up our game tonight."

And step up their game they certainly did. Sacramento started rough but eventually broke out a 19 point lead in the second quarter thanks to the play of Jimmer Fredette and Isaiah Thomas. Fredette expanded on his performance, as he scored a game-high 12 points in the first half.

"We wanted that wow factor. Coach put Isaiah and I in and we were cooking, but we made sure not to get too out of hand. That's why Coach decided to take Isaiah out and put Aaron in near the end of the half. We needed to slow it down."

At halftime, Smart and his players really got into a charitable mood.

"First half was merely putting the present under the tree. We knew that the best part was still coming, and my guys couldn't wait", Smart told media after the game.

Following halftime the Kings did their best to get the Suns back into the game. The offense stagnated, passes would "mistakenly" go into opposing player's hands, and rotations were "missed". DeMarcus Cousins was among the most generous.

"I knew I had to get Marcin something pretty good this year because I felt kinda bad for torching him last year. So I'd take the ball down into the post, and instead of moving the ball or anything, I'd just pump fake the ball a couple times and try to shoot through his hands. I could tell he was having a blast."

Gortat finished with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 6 blocks, but he wasn't the only Sun enjoying his time out there on the court. Shannon Brown, he of the career 8.0 PPG and .419 FG% scored 22 points on 10-13 from the field, including the big go-ahead three in the third quarter.

"Man, I was getting kind of scared in the first half because they were pouring it on. I thought maybe they weren't going to be giving us a present this year or something. But man was I wrong. I started to figure it out when they were getting out of my way on defense and leaving me wide open in the corner for five seconds, but they almost had me early on. Great stuff."

Suns Forward Luis Scola shared Brown's sentiment.

"Yeah that was a fun one. They let me get a double-double with assists! Shoot, I've only had 18 games in my career with 5 assists or more. Just incredibly thoughtful. I need to get cracking though, I was just going to get them a gift card to T.J. Maxx."

Once the Suns knew they were being given the game, the Kings didn't bother trying to hide it anymore. Phoenix outscored the Kings 31-14 in the third quarter and 27-22 in the fourth. Jimmer Fredette tried to give it a sporting effort, but his 22 points in 22 minutes.

Forward James Johnson apparently wasn't in on the plan.

"Coach just told me to do what I do. But Jimmer and Isaiah were hot so I decided to just focus on attacking the basket instead of shooting unnecessary jumpers."

Johnson finished with 11 points on 5-6 shooting, one of his better efforts of the year, and Smart wasn't particularly pleased.

"I was getting a bit uncomfortable with how well James was playing, but in the end everything worked out."

Smart shouldn't have been worried, as the rest of the team managed the gameplan perfectly, especially coming out of timeouts. John Salmons expertly held the ball for five seconds on one inbounds play as no Kings would come to him. On another the Kings pretended to be unaware of the shot clock despite having a few minutes to draw up a play, and on yet another they simply let the Suns have the ball for an easy layup.

"I couldn't have been more proud about the way our guys executed those plays to imperfection."

Jimmer Fredette was quick to give credit to Coach Smart however.

"Coach deserves a lot of praise too. We got a bit out of hand in the first half with that lead so he let the starters handle most of that third quarter, and it was a great decision. Aaron and John were throwing balls everywhere, Cisco was jacking up shots with 20 seconds left on the shot clock, and Coach was right there, not calling timeouts and letting me sit till the 4th quarter. We couldn't have done this without him."

Sacramento's next game comes Wednesday against the Golden State Warriors. Asked what they had in store for them, Smart just smiled.

The Kings are truly an inspiration, and we can all learn lessons in charity and selflessness from them.

Planning For A Long Vacation

A long vacation with friends and loved ones may only come once every few years. Planning for it may also take similar amount of time. However, this does not necessarily mean that all the nitty-gritty details need to be formally written and anticipated. It would not be a relaxing vacation if it is too regimented. A general idea about the budget, places to visit, transportation, itinerary of activities and accommodations will suffice general plan about the budget, means of transportation and itinerary would be enough. Other details may simply need to be spontaneous.

Planning for a long vacation with loved ones or friends can be stressful if done impulsively or in a very short period of time such as a few days. A long vacation should be planned at least several months to about a year. The longer time for planning will allow for smoother implementation of the plan. Several options can be compared in terms of locations, transportations, tour packages and budget. The logistical aspects can be less burdensome in this manner. The most cost-effective but worthwhile vacation package can be chosen.

Last-minute and impulsive decisions can be avoided with the help of careful planning. There will be enough provisions and contingency preparations. Getting lost, shortage in budget, and other similar problems can be prevented. For instance, plotting the travel route to the place of vacation will allow for more efficient means of transportation. Short side trips to interesting locations can also be made.

Longer time for planning also means that there will be enough time to save money. The financial burden will be lessened in this manner. A vacation for a group of five or more people can be costly if not properly planned. There will be no need to stretch the limits of credit cards to pay for the vacation costs if there is sufficient savings. Saving and allocating money for a planned vacation would be financially wise.

Planning for a luxurious family vacation does not necessarily have to cost a small fortune or a half-year's income. One does not need to be wealthy to afford a luxurious vacation. It is a matter of choosing the right vacation package. A typical vacation package may include transportation, tours, accommodation and food. There are several options that can be considered to find the perfect package that will suit the budget and needs.

The primary and most crucial consideration when planning for a vacation is the location. Choosing a relatively near location can be translated to significant savings in terms of transportation. On the other hand, there are vacation-destinations located in areas that have lower costs of living compared to urban centers. These can be good options for a long family vacation.

Nickelodeon app target of kids' privacy complaint

12 hrs.

The Center for Digital Democracy, a non-profit?advocacy group that addresses Internet and broadband issues,?filed a complaint Monday with the Federal Trade Commission, asking it to investigate and take action against Nickelodeon and mobile game?maker?PlayFirst?for violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act with the game "SpongeBob Diner Dash."

The game ? which has been downloaded 10?million times for iPhone and iPad according to PlayFirst's?blog?? asks children to provide "a wide range of personal information, including full name, email address and other online contact information, without providing notice to parents or obtaining prior parental consent, as required" by COPPA, says the Center for Digital Democracy.?

COPPA, which?requires commercial websites to obtain parental permission before collecting the?personal?info?of any user under the age of 13,?was passed by Congress in 1998?? long before mobile apps came into being. The FTC and other organizations want the law to be updated to reflect the smartphone and tablet realities of 2012.

Earlier this month, the FTC issued a second report about mobile apps and children's privacy, comparing?a new survey of kids' apps with its 2011 study, taking Apple, Google and app developers to task. The commission said?there was "little progress toward giving parents the information they need to determine what data is being collected from their children, how it is being shared, or who will have access to it."

A representative from the Viacom-owned?Nickelodeon, speaking for both?the youth-targeted broadcaster and its development?partner in the SpongeBob game,?told?NBC News Monday?that the companies were "just made aware of this complaint," and are "currently investigating it."

In the?complaint, and in a statement,?the Washington D.C.-based Center for Digital Democracy contends that "SpongeBob Diner Dash" uses "mobile marketing technologies such as unique device identifiers (UDIDs) and 'device tokens,' which enable companies to send custom messages to individual children in the form of 'push notifications.'"

Such forms of online contact information "are considered personal information under current COPPA rules," the center says.

?It is clear that this is not an isolated incident,? said Jeff Chester, the?center's executive director said in the statement. "As the FTC report last week on children?s mobile apps revealed, this industry is not taking seriously its obligations under COPPA. The commission needs to step up its enforcement actions and adopt new rules that will address the growing threats to children?s privacy in the expanding mobile marketplace.? ??

Multilevel Marketing Can Help Your Business Get Ahead | Jim ...

Mistakes Are Costing You! Learn To Stop?Making ALL 189 Of Them!

Struggling With WordPress? 100+ Step-By-Step Videos Now Available!

Posted by Administrator on Dec 17, 2012 in Uncategorized | Comments Off

Instead of going out to find another job, it makes a lot more sense to establish yourself with work at home. Being a small home business owner can seem challenging, but multilevel marketing can help you better communicate, earn more money, and help other independent agents. The valuable advice given in this article will put you on the right track for multi-level marketing success.

Set up your MLM website as a ?how to? site. By setting up this tutorial, you will not only push more traffic to your website, you will also extend the time users stay there. This will help you generate more interest from your reader and hopefully encourage them to join your network.

Use a blog on your website to keep your customers informed about your business, new products, and any discounts you might be offering. They will hopefully appreciate this, and you will increase the chances of them doing business with you again in the future. You can post articles on your blog that promote and drum up interest for new services or products.

TIP! When deciding which network marketing program to join, you should choose one that offers products that appeal to you. If you like the product you sell, your clients will sense this, and trust you more.

Focus on a short timescale to maximize success. Evaluate your marketing work over a period of 90 days or less. Don?t overemphasize your bigger, future plan. Working with smaller time frames allows you to constantly update your program to maximize results.

Show your customers the value to what you are presenting. Place this value to others at the forefront when building your network. Ultimately, you are interested in earning money and enhancing your own interests. Everyone else is doing the same thing. What problems do your products solve? Is there a way that your products or services will better their lives? Keep these questions at the center of your strategy throughout the entire process.

You need to regularly meet with your team. Your team has to work together; meeting in person will allow everyone to work together to draft their game plan and work towards mutual goals. Group meeting are essential if you want to cultivate a cohesive team.

TIP! It is completely natural for people to like talking about themselves and what they want. Take advanage of that instinct.

Social networking sites are a great starting point for multi-level marketing, until such time as you can establish your own website. Even a well-designed, active, interesting blog will do the trick.

In addition to having your own website for MLM, a social network site is a great idea too. Building a sense of community online will help grow your network. Keep in mind that an active and well designed blog helps too.

TIP! Video marketing is a good way to get people to pay attention to your campaign. Videos give you the chance to present a content-rich marketing strategy very cheaply, all you have to do is host the video file.

You should look at multilevel marketing like it is your business venture. A common cause of failure is not taking MLM efforts seriously. Multilevel marketing takes serious time and energy; with enough effort, you could make it your full time job. It is important to constantly learn more about MLM, and obtain training whenever necessary.

Try to visualize yourself helping actual individuals, rather than simply pitching them a product. Focus on how your niche can help someone instead of what is so great about it. This will cause your product to be highly desirable to the customers.

You should treat multi-level marketing as it is a business and not a hobby. Maintain a professional demeanor, and apply yourself and your time to your endeavors.

TIP! Be patient if you?ve just started in this type of business. It may be common to get discouraged, but success is won through perseverance.

Starting off with a well thought out business plan can help you make your network marketing endeavors more successful more quickly. Write your goals out and the ways you plan to meet them. Have an idea of how much business you will need to turn a profit, your monthly sales goals and what your marketing plans are.

Think outside the box when you are creating content for your media. Leave no stone unturned!

One of the things to look out for is a quality compensation package with your partner. This will help you determine if the campaign will be worth putting your time into, or if you should look for another option.

TIP! Be a yes man when you are dealing with marketing leads, and avoid saying no whenever possible. Keep your body language open and positive.

True marketing leaders are those who enjoy helping others succeed, as well. When you can assist people in their marketing, you?ll notice an immediate increase in your profits.

The best way to improve your approach is by learning from past mistakes. Analyze how you failed and take the information learned to heart. When you can study how you failed, you will be able to see what methods do and do not work for you.

By joining a marketing network, you get the opportunity to run your own business while also connecting customers with a large, resourceful corporation. Use the advice here to launch your career as an agent who can facilitate multi-level marketing for your clients.

TIP! Keep your ears open to learn from the many internet marketers who are willing and eager to share their internet marketing experiences with you. A great method of doing this is through podcasts.

Help Your Child Master Soccer Terms : Article Feeder Blog

There is no denying that parents know the important role that sports plays in the lives of their kids. For this reason, when a kid hinted that he likes a certain sport, a parent willingly gives his support in every way. Most of the time moms and dads take the role of a coach, being the first teacher everyone considers, they are expected to know something about ball games. Since soccer still carries its popularity, it is not surprising that your own kid is also fascinated with it. And sooner or later, you should tackle the need to help him learn soccer terms. To aid you in doing this, here are some tips to remember. One of the things you probably won?t be able to escape, even if you would want to, is to join him in his practices. You can make use of this chance to introduce the basic soccer vocabulary. This can prove to be effective since you would be teaching through demonstration.

Another great opportunity to teach your kid more of the soccer vocabulary is while you watch soccer games. This being said, you might have to invite him to join you as you watch live games or game coverage on television. This is your best bet to show him how a particular word applies in the actual game. This also makes it easy for him to remember the terms and eventually apply them. Of course, you would need to be updated with soccer game schedule to be able to do this. So along with doing a review of the soccer lingo online, you should find time to check out the latest game schedule. In addition, it would help to encourage your child to ask you about the definition of a term he overheard and he was not so sure about, so you could teach him that work right then and there. This would allow you to feed him with new words related to soccer. His active participation can help him learn more since it would be quite impossible for you to track all the terms you were able to introduce and the rest of the terms you still need to teach him. Unless, of course, your parental instincts compelled you to maintain a checklist and take it with you even during the live games.

And last but not the least, reinforce his learning by teaching him how he could also learn soccer terms on his own, if his schedule permits. Since most kids today know how to access the Internet, make him aware of the site like Sports Pundit that he could visit for the purpose. This can drive his interest in sports more, seeing all the images and information available on the site. Encouraging your child into sports is giving him the chance to use his physical, mental and social faculties, which could make him a better person.
