Hummingbird flight: Two vortex trails with one stroke

Feb. 25, 2013 ? As of today (February 25), the Wikipedia entry for the hummingbird explains that the bird's flight generates in its wake a single trail of vortices that helps the bird hover. But after conducting experiments with hummingbirds in the lab, researchers at the University of California, Riverside propose that the hovering hummingbird instead produces two trails of vortices -- one under each wing per stroke -- that help generate the aerodynamic forces required for the bird to power and control its flight.

The results of the study could find wide application in aerospace technology and the development of unmanned vehicles for medical surveillance after natural disasters.

The researchers used high-speed image sequences -- 500 frames per second -- of hummingbirds hover-feeding within a white plume (emitted by the heating of dry ice) to study the vortex wake from multiple perspectives. They also used particle image velocimetry (PIV), a flow-measuring method used in fluid mechanics, to quantitatively analyze the flow around the hummingbirds. PIV allowed the researchers to record the particles surrounding the birds and extract velocity fields.

The films and velocity fields showed two distinct jets of downwards airflow -- one under each wing of the hummingbird. They also revealed that vortex loops around each jet are shed during each upstroke and downstroke.

The researchers therefore propose in their paper published online last month in the journal Experiments in Fluids that the hummingbird's two wings form bilateral vortex loops during each wing stroke, which is advantageous for maneuverability.

"Previous studies have indicated that slow-flying bats and faster flying birds produced different structures in their wakes," said Douglas Altshuler, formerly an assistant professor of biology at UC Riverside, whose lab led the research. "We have been investigating the wake structure of hovering hummingbirds because this allows us to decouple the effects of different types of wings -- bat versus bird -- from different forward flight speeds.

Hummingbirds each weigh 2-20 grams. Because they can hover with high precision, they are able to drink nectar from flowers without any jiggling movement to their bodies. Besides using upstrokes and downstrokes, hummingbirds can rotate their wings. They can even flap their wings from front to back with a 180-degree amplitude.

"We began this study to investigate how the hummingbird used its tail while hovering," said Marko Princevac, an associate professor of mechanical engineering and a coauthor of the research paper. "After all, many insects also hover, but they have no tail. Instead, however, our research showed something interesting about the hummingbird's wings: the bilateral vortex structure. Hummingbirds hovering should cost a lot of energy but these birds are able to hover for long periods of time. Ideally, unmanned vehicles need to be operated with a very limited energy supply, which is why understanding how the hummingbird maximizes its use of energy is tremendously beneficial."

Sam Pournazeri, a former Ph.D. graduate student in Princevac's lab and a co-author on the paper, explained that in a downstroke, the air pressure difference developed as a result of wing movement creates flow from the bottom to the top of the wing. The result is a circular movement or vortex.

"Based on theories in fluid mechanics, this vortex should close either on the wing/body or create a loop around it," he said. "It's these loops that provide circulation around the wings and cause the hummingbird to overcome its weight. Hovering requires the bird to create a lift that cancels its body weight. Although the two-vortex structure we observed increases the hummingbird's energy consumption, it provides the bird a big advantage: a lot more maneuverability."

Next, the research team plans to study the hummingbird in a wind tunnel to closely observe how the bird transitions from hovering to forward motion, and vice versa.

"Current technology is not successfully mimicking how living things fly," Princevac said. "Drones don't hover, and must rely on forward motion. Research done using hummingbirds, like ours, can inform the development of the next generation of drones."

Doctors take Harper government to court over refugee health-care cuts

By?Obert Madondo?|?The Canadian Progressive, Feb. 25, 2013:

Min Jason Kenney 239x300 150x150 Lawyers, doctors take Harper government to court over refugee health care cuts

Jason Kenney, Canada?s Immigration Minister

Canadian refugee lawyers, advocacy groups, doctors and patients are banding together to file a lawsuit ?against the Harper government?s recent draconian cuts to health care for refugees. The group from the?Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers (CARL), ?Canadian Doctors for Refugee Care (CDRC), and three individual patients, says the?cuts violate the fundamental rights of refugees as protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The group is asking the Federal Court of Canada to declare the cuts unconstitutional and illegal.

?The cuts violate the fundamental human rights of refugees,? the group said in a statement issued Friday.??They cause unwarranted sufferings to countless individuals, and unnecessary costs to the Canadian health care system.?

The cuts were implemented through the Conservatives? Bill C-31, the so-called ?Protecting Canada?s Immigration System Act?, which passed in Parliament last June and came into effect on December 15, 2012.

The Canadian Medical Association Journal has warned that the cuts?pose?serious mental health risks for refugees. Daniel Garcia Rodriguez, a refugee applicant,?almost went blind?as a result of the cuts.?Other experts have argued that the bill will not give refugees a fair chance to tell their stories.

After the bill passed, Jewish-American political activist, Nobel laureate, writer, professor, Elie Wiesel, joined tens of thousands of Canadians who vocally condemned the cuts.

?I feel morally compelled to remain on the side of other uprooted men and women everywhere.?Today, as yesterday, a nation is judged by its attitude towards refugees,? said the?Holocaust survivor.

The majority of the refugees severely impacted are persons of color and trauma survivors, two facts Conservatives seem to be unmoved by.

Just after the bill passed, its architect and Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Jason Kenney, posted a petition on his personal website?asking Canadians to thank him for a job well done.

?We, the undersigned, thank Jason Kenney for his efforts to streamline benefits afforded to refugees claimants under the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) and bring them in line with the benefits received by tax-paying Canadians, including new Canadians,? the petition said.

The House of Commons? Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security?recently?recommended?the?use of electronic ankle bracelets?on failed refugee claimants to keep a tab on their movements. The committee is?chaired by?Conservative MP Kevin Sorenson.

Last October, Kelly Block, the Conservative MP for Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar, ?celebrated? Jason?s cuts with a?flyer?mailed to members of her riding.

?New arrivals to Canada have received dental and?vision care paid by your tax dollars. They?ve had free prescriptions. Not anymore,? the flyer read.

In the House of Commons, Official Opposition NDP called on Block to apologize. ?She is bragging about denying medication for kidney disease to an elderly woman or?care to a young woman who is 18 weeks pregnant due to a sexual assault,? ?said Jinny?Sims, the NDP MP for Newton-North Delta in B.C. ?This flyer is offensive and misleading.?Will the member apologize??

Tunisia: 4 in custody for politician's murder

(AP) ? Tunisia's interior minister said Tuesday that four suspects belonging to a radical Islamist group are being held for their involvement in the murder of a leftist opposition politician earlier this month that plunged the country into a political crisis.

Ali Larayedh said the suspects, some of whom had been arrested in the last 48 hours, were just accomplices to the murder and did not include the assassin himself, who remains at large and subject to a manhunt.

The suspects range in age from 26 to 34 years old and are part of a "radical religious group," the minister said, adding that one had confessed to accompanying the actual assassin.

Chokri Belaid was shot four times outside his home on the morning of February 6, provoking widespread rioting around the country as many held the government responsible for his death.

Belaid's assassination resulted in the resignation of the country's prime minister and Larayedh has been appointed his successor to form a new coalition government.

Thousands demonstrated on Sunday, protesting the lack of progress in solving the crime, which was seen as a symptom of the increasing violence in Tunisia's politics.

Since the overthrow of the country's secular dictatorship in January 2011, there has been a rise in ultraconservative Muslims known as Salafis, some of whom have resorted to violence.

Authorities have also discovered numerous weapons caches and clashed with militants crossing into the country from neighboring Algeria and Libya.

Twitter implements DMARC standard to fight phishing

News

Twitter has implemented DMARC, a standard for preventing email spoofing, in order to make it harder for attackers to send phishing emails that appear to come from twitter.com addresses.

Twitter users are constantly targeted in phishing attacks that try to pass rogue emails as official communications from the company. These phishing emails direct users to fake Twitter websites in order to steal their login credentials.

?Earlier this month, we began using a new technology called DMARC that makes it extremely unlikely that most of our users will see any email pretending to be from a Twitter.com address. DMARC is a relatively new security protocol created by a group of organisations to help reduce the potential for email-based abuse,? said Josh Aberant, Twitter?s postmaster, Thursday in a?blog post.

DMARC, short for ?Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance,? is a standard for implementing the SPF (Sender Policy Framework) and DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) email message validation and authentication systems.

The technologies can be used to verify that an email with a sender address of, for example, twitter.com actually came from servers authorized to send email on behalf of twitter.com. The goal of DMARC is to achieve a uniform implementation of these systems among the top email services providers and other companies that would benefit from email validation.

DMARC is supported by all four major email providers ? Google (Gmail), Microsoft (Outlook.com/Hotmail), Yahoo (Yahoo Mail) and AOL. It has also been implemented by services like Facebook, PayPal, Amazon and now Twitter.

While Twitter?s support for DMARC will help email providers block messages with forged @twitter.com addresses from reaching the inboxes of many users, it won?t prevent phishing emails that masquerade as Twitter communications but have non-twitter.com sender addresses. This means that users should remain vigilant and scrutinise all details of emails received from Twitter before acting on their instructions.

DMARC celebrated its one-year anniversary earlier this month, but according to DMARC.org, the industry group that oversees the standard?s development and adoption, it already helps protect 60 percent of the world?s email boxes from spam and phishing. More than 325 million spoofed messages were rejected in November and December 2012 because leading email providers and email senders implemented DMARC, the group?said on its website.

Visiting speaker examines ending white supremacy

By Kelsey Roebuck, roebuckk@grinnell.edu

Visiting speaker Adeyemi Balogun conducted a workshop Tuesday on dismantling white supremacy that ranged from capitalism?s links to racial injustice to slave codes to incarceration rates among African-Americans today. Balogun is a member of the Black Autonomy Federation, an anti-authoritarian organization that concentrates on self-determination for the black community of the United States and the oppressed all over the world. Balogun decided to explore oppression through the intersection of colonialism and economics after reading work by political prisoners. His workshop was entitled ?Dismantling White Supremacy: A Decolonization Training.? Vincent Kelley ?16, a member of the campus group Anti-Oppression Peer Education Network (OPEN), invited Balogun to speak at Grinnell after meeting him through their mutual involvement in Deep Green Resistance, a radical environmentalist group.

He said he appreciated Balogun?s unique approach to race in the United States. ?I think that a lot of people are under the impression that we live in a post-racial society,? Kelley said. ?A lot of times I also think that anti-racism work is often treated as a topic unto itself and is not connected to other systems such as global capitalism.? Balogun?s workshop explored the institutions and philosophies that contribute to that status quo in the United States as well as on a global scale. He began by emphasizing that historic conflicts have yet to be resolved in modern society. ?Most people don?t know that, over the last year, more black people have been summarily executed by police than were killed during the height of lynch mob and Klan activity in the early part of the twentieth century,? Balogun said. During Balogun?s workshop, he explained that white supremacy was and is an ?institutionally-based? system of oppression used by America and European nations to create and maintain their positions of wealth and power. According to him, white supremacy functions through distorted perceptions. ?For white supremacy to function, it must control how people perceive the world,? Balogun said. To prove his point, Balogun analyzed America in the early 1700s. During that time, a substantial working class composed of white indentured servants, native peoples and enslaved Africans posed a considerable threat to the status quo. Following a series of multiracial slave rebellions, the ?slave codes? were created to raise the status of indentured servants. According to Balogun, this was also the first time that European servants were referred to as white in an official capacity. As a result, the ruling class weakened their opposition by dividing the working classes along racial lines. ?The concept of whiteness is itself rooted in white supremacy,? Balogun said. ?It is a culture defined by what you?re not rather than what you are.? From this early point in American colonial history, Balogun drew parallels to more contemporary racial legislation. According to him, the new laws following abolition, called the black codes, essentially made it illegal to be African American, thereby supporting the same system established by the slave codes. ?They created a new system of enslavement built on incarceration,? Balogun said. He drew these connections between the transatlantic slave trade and the modern prison system by illustrating that, in the capitalist society that evolved from early colonialism, there is an economic benefit to oppressing groups of people. ?Whenever they have implemented something like [the black codes], it has coincided with the expansion of the empire. At the same time they were doing this, they were also creating the reservation system?incarcerating native people,? Balogun said. This pattern of oppression for the economic benefit can be seen in U.S. policy in the last twenty years of violence in Africa. ?We are constantly looking to exploit new resources from all over the world,? Balogun said. ?That?s why colonialism, it hasn?t changed. It?s good for business to keep certain countries destabilized in order for them to operate mining interests and stuff like that.? As part of the workshop format, Balogun opened the floor for questions and students asked about everything from the status of black women in this colonial enterprise to what methods were being used to combat the this year?s high rate of police brutality against African Americans in Memphis. As Balogun answered these questions he pointed out that, after considering the systematic support system underlying white supremacy, it will take radical institutional and economic change before racism becomes a thing of the past. Balogun recommended organizing to combat capitalism as an inherently corrupt and failing economic institution that perpetuates white supremacy. ?Dismantling white supremacy means dismantling capitalism itself,? he said.

Americans spent over $53 billion on pets last year

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The economy may have remained sluggish last year but Americans refused to scrimp on their pets, with animal lovers spending upwards of $53 billion on food, veterinary care, kennels and other services in 2012.

That's up 5 percent from 2011, when spending first broke the $50 billion barrier, says the American Pet Products Association, a trade group based in Greenwich, Conn. And APPA President and CEO Bob Vetere predicts another 4 percent gain this year.

At about $34.3 billion, food and vet care represented about two-thirds of total spending, with money spent on supplies and over-the-counter medications rising by more than 7 percent. Spending on the growing market of alternative vet care, such as acupuncture, totaled about $12.5 billion.

Vetere says spending on services like grooming, boarding, hotels and pet-sitting grew nearly 10 percent during 2012 to almost $4.4 billion.

Wedding bell blues; Brain Gain NZ; Language and savings; Dissolving your debt; Staying out of debt

By Amanda Morrall

1) Wedding bell blues

Debt is bad for a myriad of reasons but here's another I didn't expect; it impairs marital prospects.. Research reported here by Forbes found a correlation between student debt levels and singledom among the female graduates in particular. Obviously correlation doesn't prove causation and the piece explores various reasons why there might be a relationship between the two, including the possibility more women are deliberately eschewing marriage because they have other things on their mind other than being wives. I'd be interested to see some longitudinal studies done in New Zealand given our student loan debt stands at a staggering NZ$12.9 billion. All I know is if you take on someone else's debt, there should be a lot of love invested in the relationship.

2) Brain Gain

Because I'm all about positive thought and action these days, three cheers to BNZ's Tony Alexander for taking a fresh new approach to New Zealand's economic challenges by championing all that is good, promising and worthy of NZ Inc. Alexander, already a prolific writer, has added to his oeuvre with a monthly newsletter called Brain Gain as a way to keep expats connected and up to speed with what's happening back at home.? Here's a link to the first edition. HT to a very positive soul for putting me on to it.

3) Language and savings

Economist Keith Chen, in the TED talk, below makes an interesting link between language and savings and the power of words to shape and influence outcomes in the future. Bookmark it if you don't have time to watch it today.

?

4) Debt dissolution

Proof positive where there's a will, there's a way, of getting out of debt. How quickly you dig out depends on just how devoted you are to the cause. Eating discounted food past the best by date is not my recommended way of doing it, but credit to the bloke brave enough to go this route whose story is mentioned in this personal finance blog on debt reduction strategies.

5) Staying out of debt

And more on what it feels like to be debt free. The video below carried by Fox News explores one couple's strategy of getting rid of US$52K debt and their determination to stay debt free. Their best bit of advice (in my humble opinion) is doing something you love and feel passionate about for a living so you don't waste money filling emotional voids caused by the misery of a dead end job you don't enjoy. Same message I carry in my book. When you are happy, you are less likely to spend money.

Happy Friday and have a most excellent weekend.

Penguin found stranded on New Zealand beach dies

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? A royal penguin found stranded on a New Zealand beach has died.

The penguin was found Sunday by hikers. It was emaciated and suffering kidney failure and was taken to the Wellington Zoo.

It was just the fourth time over the past 100 years that a royal penguin has been found on the North Island of New Zealand. They generally live more than 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) away around Macquarie Island, about halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica.

Lisa Argilla, the veterinary science manager at the zoo, said Friday that they suspect the penguin suffered multiple organ failure. It was severely underweight, she said, and had no reserves.

She said the zoo did the best it could.

The penguin's arrival has revived memories of another penguin, an emperor nicknamed Happy Feet, that arrived in 2011 and whose recovery at the zoo captured the hearts of many before he was released.

Royal penguins have a yellow crest, eat krill and squid and generally live on and around Macquarie Island, about halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica.

Jenny Boyne, who lives near Tora Beach where the penguin was found, said she drove it to the zoo in a fish crate after staff suggested she bring it in.

"It sat down like a little quiet lamb," she said.

The bird stood up briefly a couple of times and honked but generally lay still for the two-hour journey, she said. She blasted the air conditioning and spritzed the bird with water after zoo staff instructed her to keep it cool. She said she was surprised it had no significant smell.

Argilla said the penguin weighed about 2.7 kilograms (6 pounds) when it arrived.

The penguin was about 1 year old, 50 centimeters (20 inches) long and its sex had not been determined, Argilla said.

Royal penguins can grow to about 75 centimeters (30 inches) and 5.5 kilograms (12 pounds). They are considered a threatened species but not endangered. They shed all their feathers during an annual molt, which the New Zealand penguin had been doing when found.

Shia LaBeouf quits play, hints at Baldwin clash

Mario Anzuoni / REUTERS file

By Natalie Finn, E!Online

Shia LaBeouf has cast himself as the lead in a nail-biter of an off-Broadway drama. Somewhat mocking the "creative differences" explanation that was given as the reason for him leaving the upcoming Broadway revival of "Orphans"?less than a month before previews are set to begin, the actor took to Twitter today to post emails between him; the play's director, Daniel Sullivan; and erstwhile costars Alec Baldwin and Tom Sturridge that indicate something more dramatic occurred behind the scenes.?

"Alec, I'm sorry for my part of a dis-agreeable situation," LaBeouf wrote in an email to El Dorado Pictures with a subject line reading, "Apology." In the philosophical missive, the actor also called his dad "a s--t human" and wrote things like "a man owns up," "a man does not know everything" and "a man can tell you he was wrong."

Is Anne Hathaway reprising her Les Miserables role on Broadway?

"I'm too old for disagreeable situations," responded Sullivan. "you're one hell of a great actor. Alec is who he is. you are who you are. you two are incompatible. I should have known it."

"this one will haunt me," the Tony-winning director continued. "you tried to warn me. you said you were a different breed. I didn't get it." Signed, "dan."

Those two emails were attached to a tweet reading, "creative differences."

Shia LaBeouf, Kristen Stewart, Natalie Portman topped Forbes' 2012 list of most bankable stars

Baldwin's camp declined to comment to E! News, while reps for Sturridge and LaBeouf -- who would have been making his Broadway debut in "Orphans" -- have yet to respond to requests for comment.

LaBeouf followed up an hour later with an exchange between him and Baldwin, in which the 30 Rock star assured him, "I've been through this before. It's been awhile. And perhaps some of the particulars are different. But it comes down to the fact that what we all do now is critical. Perhaps especially for you."

"I don't have an unkind word to say about you. You have my word," Baldwin added, signing off as "AB."

Find out why Matthew Broderick stopped in the middle of his performance of Nice Work If You Can Get It last night

LaBeouf replied with, "same. be well. good luck on the play. you'll be great," attaching the exchange to a tweet quoting David Mamet (who is not affiliated with the revival of Orphans): "Acting has become a profession of the genteel class."

Several hours later, the Transformers star tweeted, "Depth of friendship does not depend on length of acquaintance. Tom = good dude - good actor."

Attached was an email from Sturridge, also from today, reading, "I don't really know what to write. I went in this afternoon and they were all there...producers, etc. I said my piece but they didn't really listen. I don't understand what has happened here. Maybe you have had a more enlightening conversation with someone by now.

See more big stars who've done Broadway (but rarely this dramatically)

"All I can say is that it truly was an honour to work with you even if it was only for a few days," the Brit continued. "I was stunned by the work you were doing, the performance you were giving. I think you lifted the play to a place higher than maybe it even deserved to be...Hope you're ok brother."

Talk about your dramatic twists. We cannot wait to see what happens after intermission!

Obama bypasses Congress with public economic pitch

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Weeks before President Barack Obama's State of the Union address, White House aides were locking down a plan for the sales pitch that would follow during three days of travel focused on his main themes.

The effort to promote Obama's proposals on jobs, wages and education involved visits to Asheville, N.C., Decatur Ga., and Chicago, participating in a Google+ chat and mobilizing the president's formidable former campaign apparatus.

One thing it didn't include? Congress.

For the White House, this is a campaign for public opinion, not one to write specific legislation.

When it comes to broadening early education or raising the minimum wage, Obama is not ready to make lawmakers a part of the process yet.

Instead, Obama is trying to change an economic debate that has been focused on deficits and on managing the national debt to one about middle-class opportunities and economic growth. Just into his second term, Obama and his aides want to move away from the type of budget confrontations that have defined the past two years and take advantage of his re-election to pressure Republicans.

"If the Republicans reflexively oppose everything the president does, we have to go directly to the American people to marshal their support to get things done," Obama senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer said. "The metric we're looking at is whether you start to see fissures in the Republican coalition."

This president, like recent ones before him, has gone to the public before in hopes of persuading lawmakers. It hasn't always proved a winning tactic.

President Bill Clinton failed to use the public to win support for his health care overhaul. President George W. Bush was unable to make changes to Social Security in his second term.

Obama tried to muster public support to fight climate change but the legislative effort came up short. Even Obama's all-out effort on behalf of sweeping health care changes only succeeded in keeping Democrats unified, not in winning over Republicans.

But Obama and White House aides are heartened by what they believe were successful public appeals for extending a payroll tax cut in 2010 and for preventing a doubling of interest rates on federal student loans last summer.

What made those different was that they addressed pressing issues: The payroll tax cut was expiring at year's end and interest rates on student loans were set to double last July 1.

Expanding preschools and raising the minimum wage from $7.25 to $9 an hour by the end of 2015, on the other hand, are policy ideas just sprung on Congress during last Tuesday's prime-time speech.

"When there is no clear path between what he called for in the State of the Union and then going on the road, and there's no road map about exactly when we're going to get into these issues, it's a little bit like shouting in the forest," said Patrick Griffin, the White House legislative director under Clinton. "Something has to be queued up in order to make these visits work."

David Winston, a Republican pollster and strategist who advises House Republicans, said the key to a successful policy campaign is two-fold.

"The first and central is how important is solving whatever problem is being defined," he said. "The second one is does the defined benefit solve the problem."

He argues that even though Obama in 2010 won the health care fight in a partisan showdown, the public didn't judge health care to be as important as dealing with the economy. As a result, Republicans won control of the House in elections that year.

The White House strategy now in part recognizes that the economy remains the No. 1 public concern even as the president engages Congress on issues such as immigration and gun violence.

It was finally on Friday, his last road trip of the week, when Obama brought his message back to guns. But even then, like in his State of the Union speech, he connected it to his main economic themes. Speaking not far from his Hyde Park home on Chicago's South Side, Obama linked the near-daily violence to communities where there is little economic hope.

At the White House, Pfeiffer argues that it would be pointless to present Congress with legislation on preschools and minimum wage increases now when the president is just raising the profile of the two issues and when he's already working with Congress on other matters.

"There's a lot of traffic in the legislative process right now," he said. "If we were to send a bill up on some of these things tomorrow, you guys would all write that the president has overloaded the system."

In pushing his agenda, Obama is wielding extra muscle that he didn't employ before, relying on his reconfigured re-election campaign operation. The organization has reappeared as a nonprofit group ready to engage in legislative fights and grass-roots mobilization to supplement the White House.

The group, Organizing for Action, planned a tele-town hall Saturday hosted by Rahm Emanuel, the Chicago mayor who was Obama's White House chief of staff. The event was intended to press the same themes Obama has pushed for the past four days.

Another expected participant was Austan Goolsbee, former chairman of Obama's Council of Economic Advisers.

The group's board of directors includes former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs and top campaign officials such as Stephanie Cutter and Julianna Smoot. Obama senior campaign adviser David Axelrod will serve as a consultant.

All retain strong ties to the White House; Axelrod and Emanuel were in the West Wing last week.

Griffin, the former Clinton aide, said such an organization would introduce a brand new element to White House outreach.

He recalled Clinton's failed effort on health care and his attempt to go over the head of Congress in 1993.

"We tried to build an outside game but we were relying on external organizations to do what President Obama's team wants to do on its own," he said. "The question is, is he going to use this organization to really mobilize folks toward some specific, concrete objective. That to me is a whole new dimension to presidential congressional relations."

Resigning pope calls for 'real renewal' in Church

AFP - Pope Benedict XVI on Thursday called for a "real renewal" in the Catholic Church in the spirit of the reformist Second Vatican Council of the 1960s in one of his final speeches before his historic resignation at the end of this month.

"We must work for the realisation of the real Council and for a real renewal of the Church," the pope told hundreds of parish priests from his Rome diocese assembled in a Vatican auditorium.

Children mark Chinese New Year making, masks, lanterns and fans

Children at Avon House Preparatory School, High Road, Woodford Green, mark Chinese New Year making, masks, lanterns and fans

Chinese New Year was celebrated by children as they tried Chinese food and performed dragon dances.

Pre-prep children at Avon House Preparatory School, in High Road, Woodford Green also made Chinese fans and lanterns and as it's the year of the snake they also made their own snake mobile.

Headteacher Amanda Campbell said: ?To mark it being the year of the snake the children designed and cut out their own snake mobiles and enjoyed learning how to make and cook vegetable wantons.

?Each child also painted their own square of a Chinese mask and these squares were then put together to create some magnificent Chinese masks.

?The children from different year groups worked well to help and support each other throughout the different activities.

?All the children had a fun-filled day of learning and developing their skills.

?They even had delicious Chinese food for their lunch."

Is Google mining your personal info for Democrat voter databases?

Is Google mining your personal info for Democrat voter databases?

Many of us use Google products on a daily, if not hourly, basis. ?Now some are raising concern that Google may have?frighteningly?close ties to Democrat voter databases. The resulting partnership would be?frightening?indeed.

from Red State:

Remember that enormous, sophisticated data operation the Obama campaign had? The one that gave them massive daily data on public opinion trends in almost every segment of potential voters.

It?s almost as if Democrats had access to some sort of huge database of real time information about what the public was reading or writing online. The kind of breathtakingly large, real-time data that could be used for real-time trend analysis, predictive modeling and even behavioral manipulation.

On a completely unrelated note, former RNC eCampaign Director Michael Turk wrote Monday that ?the frightening advantage the left has is in a less touted entity known as the Analyst Institute (AI) and a consortium of behavioral scientists? who are ?concerned not only with your characteristics and voting behavior, but how they can manipulate that behavior.?

Now, combine Obama?s political campaign with Google?s near-comprehensive real-time data and the left?s behavioral analysis. ?What do you get? Beat.

This goes beyond just campaigns. ?Google likes to brag that they can detect flu outbreaks two weeks before the CDC based on search volume. Eric Schmidt once bragged that the company could predict stock market movements.

Imagine how much more could be learned if Google?s computer algorithms combined not only search data but also all of the data they get by ?reading everything written in or sent to Gmail and whatever you store on Google docs and Google Drive. Then imagine what Democratic voter data groups like Catalist (which launched as a for-profit operation, allowing it much more latitude in working with outside groups?.or companies) could do with that data.

Google should wise up and learn that they are being used as pawns in a bigger game. ?Democrat ideas like ?net neutrality? and internet censorship will cause Google far more harm than good. ?

Reasons to Be Proud of Becoming a Housewife | Home Design Ideas

14595290.cms Reasons to Be Proud of Becoming a HousewifeBecoming a housewife you don?t need to go to work and be troubled by office jobs. You just need to stay at home to take care of house and family. Unfortunately some wives refuse to be full time housewives because they feel ashamed of it. Well, don?t be! You should be proud of it because:

You can see children growing bigger

Staying at home you have more time to take care of your family especially children. If you have been taking care of them since they?re babies and hold almost all of duties yourself, you?ll see your children growing bigger. Also when they start studying at school, you give them full attention, bring and take them to/from school. Working at office you?ll not be able to experience this.

You guarantee family needs

It?s still about taking care of family. Being a housewife you give full attention to your family. You know what they needs. You know when your husband needs new office clothes, when your children need new bags, what nutrients should be given to your children, what date your children should go to dentist Melbourne to check their teeth, more and more. While if you work, could you do or at least remember those things?

You?re more skilled

You?re accustomed to take care of house and family. You clean house every day and tidy it up as well. You might also plant many flowers and vegetables in the garden. You cook every day for family. Indirectly, you?ll be more skilled. How could you feel not proud of it?

Stay happy and proud of yourself becoming a housewife. You have and do great jobs that working women might not do.

1,000 clues in manhunt for ex-LAPD officer

LAPD media relations spokesman Andy Neiman briefs the media in the latest in the search for ex-LAPD officer Christopher Dorner, suspected of killing three people.

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

LAPD officials admitted Tuesday that the manhunt for ex-cop Christopher Dorner -- now in its sixth day -- has turned "frustrating" as they sift through a mountain of clues, including a video that may show the suspect stocking up on scuba gear before the killing spree.

Former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner, who is suspected of killing three people in a revenge rampage.

"With a thousand clues or tips, you have to prioritize," LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman said at a briefing.

Dorner, 33, may not even be in the United States any longer. Police confirmed that they are looking into the possibility he fled to Mexico -- the destination he mentioned when he tried to steal a boat in San Diego last Wednesday.

Dorner, who was in the Navy Reserves, is accused of killing a retired captain's daughter and her fiance in Irvine on Feb. 3 and charged with killing a police officer in Riverside, Calif., last Thursday.

Investigators say he is seeking revenge for being fired from the LAPD in 2008. A manifesto posted online details his grievances and sets forth a plan to execute police figures and their families.

Police have recovered his burned-out truck near the Big Bear Lake ski resort, but a door-to-door search there -- along with a $1 million reward -- has turned up no sign of him.

"It is frustrating," Neiman said. "We are hopeful that these investigative leads will lead to a conclusion."

Among the newest leads, a video that was posted on TMZ that appears to show Dorner purchasing scuba equipment at Sport Chalet in Torrance, Calif., on Feb. 1. Neiman said police had not nailed down if it was Dorner and could not say why he would be buying underwater gear.

A criminal complaint filed in federal court last week says Dorner may have fled to Mexico, but provides no specifics. It also revealed that investigators have been tracking an associate of Dorner -- someone with the initials J.Y. -- whose family has property not far from where Dorner's vehicle was abandoned and torched.

NBC News' Jessica Benson contributed to this report.

2 charged in slaying of Chicago honor student

CHICAGO (AP) ? Two gang members were charged with murder Monday in the death of a 15-year-old honor student who was shot near the Chicago home of President Barack Obama just days after she performed during his inauguration festivities in Washington, authorities said.

The two young men were described by police as "persons of interest" when they were taken into custody early Sunday, a day after first lady Michelle Obama and other dignitaries attended the funeral of Hadiya Pendleton.

Michael Ward, 18, and Kenneth Williams, 20, are now charged with one count of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm, Chicago police spokeswoman Melissa Stratton said. She said police believe both men are gang members.

Pendleton, a popular high school majorette, was with a group of friends who took cover during a rainstorm under a canopy in a park about a mile from the Obama home on the city's South Side. Police said a man hopped a fence, ran toward them and opened fire with a handgun. Pendleton was struck in the back and died later that day. Two others were injured.

Police have said none of the people in Pendleton's group were affiliated with gangs but that the gunman apparently mistook one for a member of a rival gang that had encroached on his gang's turf. The men charged Monday live nearby, Stratton said.

Pendleton's death was one of more than 40 homicides in Chicago in January, a total that made it the deadliest January in the city in more than a decade. But it was her background, her ties to the president's inauguration and the location of the park that thrust her death into the national headlines and put Chicago at the center of a national debate over gun control.

Not only did the first lady attend the teen's funeral, but the girl's parents were set to sit with Michelle Obama during the president's State of the Union address on Tuesday night. Obama is scheduled to return to Chicago three days later to discuss gun violence.

Homicides in Chicago topped 500 last year for the first time since 2008, stoking residents' concerns about gun violence and leading the police department to put more officers on the street and to focus more on combatting gangs.

Just as the December killing of 20 children and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., brought renewed scrutiny of the nation's gun laws, the death of the popular Chicago teen has cast Chicago's gun violence problem in a new light.

Earlier Monday, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel seemed to make just that point.

"The only time when the gun issue ever gets affected is when Newtown happens," he said. "What happens in urban areas around the country too often ... gets put to the side."

He said that while it's not wrong that massacres stir such debate, what happens on the streets of Chicago and in other urban areas "gets put in a different value system."

"These are our kids," he said, his voice rising. "These are our children."

Emanuel joined Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy and Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez at an afternoon news conference to announce they would push for tougher gun laws that would increase the minimum sentences and require offenders to serve at least 85 percent of their sentences.

They say the law now allows offenders to be released after serving no more than half their sentences and sometimes obtain their release after a matter of weeks. Emanuel said he has been busy talking to state lawmakers about sponsoring the legislation.

To underscore the dangers that releasing such offenders so quickly, McCarthy brought photographs of men who were either arrested on murder charges or who were homicide victims themselves while they were on parole, often just months after they were convicted of gun charges.

"The gun laws are not working," said Alvarez. "They're not deterring gangbangers. We're not seeing gang member going to prison for long enough sentences."

Past Popes Served With Kidney Failure, Parkinson's Disease -- and a Drooling Problem

While Pope Benedict XVI might be the first Holy Father to voluntarily resign because of old age and deteriorating health, the papacy has a long history of health ailments -- from depression to gout to cancer.

According to church law, as long as a pope is able to conduct Mass, he can continue to do so ? even if he is suffering the pain of failing kidneys and is otherwise bedridden, like Pope Alexander VII was in 1667.

RELATED: Pope Benedict XVI Resigns: The Statement

Pope Alexander VII's surgeon and confessor tried to persuade him not to go before the crowd on Easter Sunday of 1667, but he did it anyway. The pope died three days later, according to "The Deaths of the Popes," by Wendy J. Reardon.

More than a century later, Pope Clement XIV complained of pain and wasting away before he became known as the pope who drooled and had eyes that "darted in their bulging sockets" as he fearfully clung to walls for fear of a Jesuit assassination attempt, according to Reardon. He died after correctly predicting his own death in 1774.

Then, in 1958, Pope Pius XII died after enduring hiccoughs and strokes for five years. The hiccoughs became so intense, that they tore the lining of his stomach, Reardon wrote. He died of complications from pneumonia at 82 years old.

Still, the popes stayed the course until their deaths.

Pope Benedict XVI Resignation: Inside The Conclave Watch Video

"Death has never been an issue that has worried popes," said papal historian Anura Guruge, a former IBM employee who's spent the last six years researching the papacy and entering related data into more than 70 spreadsheets for some first-of-its-kind analysis. He's written two books on the subject.

"Popes talk about no purgatory for popes," he said. "They immediately go to God's house and they're immediately in the presence of the father. Many of the popes on their death beds expressed enormous amounts of joy."

With only seven voluntary resignations out of more than 265 legitimate popes, ailing and death have become part of the process, Guruge said. If God is ready for a new pope, he will simply call the current one home to heaven.

"This pope's resigning is essentially overriding God's will," he said, adding that Pope Benedict XVI's resignation was a surprise to him. "We had suspected that he had more health issues than had been made public. ... A pope resigning is really not the right thing to do."

Pope Benedict XVI, who was one of the oldest popes when he was elected in 2005 at age 78, had a stroke in 1991 that reportedly temporarily affected his vision. He fell in 1992 and 2009, and also had either arthritis or arthrosis, a similarly painful and debilitating joint condition. He was spotted using a cane during trips to Mexico and Cuba last year. He also used a mobile platform to get around St. Peter's.

The pope's brother, George Ratzinger, told the U.K.'s Telegraph that the pope's doctor advised him against taking any more transatlantic trips.

"His age is weighing on him," Ratzinger, 89, told the Telegraph, adding that the pope had been considering stepping down. "At this age, my brother wants more rest."

Father Virgilio Elizondo, a professor at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, said he thinks Pope Benedict XVI made a very difficult but wise decision by resigning. He added that the papacy has a history of unpredictability, and the surprise resignation fits right in.

Disabled cruise ship now being towed to Alabama

HOUSTON (AP) ? The operators of a cruise vessel stranded in the Gulf of Mexico after a weekend engine fire said Monday evening that the craft had drifted so far north of its original position that they now will tow the ship to Mobile, Ala., instead of their original plan for Progreso, Mexico.

Carnival Cruise Lines President and CEO Gerry Cahill said in a statement that strong currents caused the vessel, the Carnival Triumph, to drift about 90 miles north of its original position off the Yucatan Peninsula.

Cahill's statement says the ship should arrive in Mobile on Thursday and that it will allow for less complicated re-entry for passengers without passports.

Passengers had limited access to bathrooms, food and hot coffee on Monday as they waited for tugboats to arrive, Carnival Cruise Lines said in a statement.

The Carnival Triumph had been floating aimlessly about 150 miles off the Yucatan Peninsula since a fire erupted in the aft engine room early Sunday, knocking out the ship's propulsion system. No one was injured and the fire was extinguished. The ship has been operating on backup generator power since the incident, the statement said.

The ship, which left Galveston, Texas, on Thursday and was scheduled to return there Monday, will instead be towed to Mobile with its 3,143 passengers 1,086 crew members. They are due to arrive in Alabama on Thursday.

One tugboat arrived Monday afternoon, and the other was expected later in the evening, Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen said in an email. The Coast Guard has informed Mexican authorities of the situation in their waters, a spokesman said.

When another Carnival cruise ship, the Legend, rendezvoused with the stranded vessel Monday, supplying Triumph passengers with food and supplies, Texas resident Brent Nutt was able to briefly chat with his wife, Bethany, who could draw a cellphone signal from the visiting cruise line.

Without power, the ship's stabilizers are apparently not working, Nutt told The Associated Press, and the massive liner had been leaning to one side Sunday. By Monday afternoon, the ship seemed more upright, he said.

"She sounded a whole lot better today than she did yesterday," Nutt said about two hours after chatting with his 32-year-old wife.

Passengers were also given food, Nutt said, and some of the bathrooms are working. But the ship is dirty, Nutt said his wife told him.

"There's water and feces all over the floor," Nutt relayed. "It's not the best conditions. You would think Carnival would have something in place to get these people off the ship."

Passengers also are getting sick and throwing up, he said, adding that his wife told him: "The whole boat stinks extremely bad."

Melinda Ramos, meanwhile, said her father was laughing when she briefly spoke to him Sunday.

"He might be completely joking, but he said they're sleeping in tents outside," the 19-year-old daughter of Mary and Matt Ramos told The Houston Chronicle.

A similar situation occurred on a Carnival cruise ship in November 2010. That vessel was also stranded for three days with 4,500 people aboard after a fire in the engine room. When the passengers disembarked in San Diego they described a nightmarish three days in the Pacific with limited food, power and bathroom access.

Carnival said in a statement that it had cancelled the Triumph's next two voyages scheduled to depart Monday and Saturday. Passengers aboard the stranded ship will also receive a full refund, the statement said.

Obama awards Medal of Honor to Afghan battle hero

Shot in the arm, his base overrun, comrades dead or wounded, Army Staff Sergeant Clint Romesha rallies the survivors to beat back the Taliban and today received the nation's highest military honor.

By Daniel Arkin, Staff Writer, NBC News

President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to celebrated Army veteran Clinton Romesha on Monday afternoon, making the former active duty staff sergeant just the fourth living person to receive the military?s highest honor for service in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Romesha, 31, fought back tears as Obama presented him with the medal honoring his ?conspicuous gallantry? during the Battle of Kamdesh, a day-long firefight at a remote Afghan outpost near the Pakistan border in 2009.

?These men were outnumbered, outgunned, and almost overrun,? Obama said in his remarks in the White House East Room.?

Romesha was recognized for leading the charge against hundreds of Taliban fighters during an Oct. 3, 2009, siege on U.S. troops at Combat Outpost Keating, a small compound military officials considered indefensible.?

Eight American soldiers were killed and 20 were wounded in the surprise attack, making it the deadliest day for the U.S. in the war effort that year.

Romesha headed up efforts to retake the camp, risking his own life as U.S. troops were besieged by rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns, mortars and rifles.

Romesha, who served twice in Iraq, first took out a machine-gun team and then turned to a second, suffering shrapnel wounds when a grenade struck a generator he was using for cover.

Former Staff Sgt. Clinton Romesha is presented with the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama at the White House on Monday.

An official citation read at the ceremony described Romesha?s subsequent acts of valor.

"Undeterred by his injuries, Staff Sergeant Romesha continued to fight and upon the arrival of another soldier to aid him and the assistant gunner, he again rushed through the exposed avenue to assemble additional soldiers," the citation says.

?With complete disregard for his own safety, (he) continually exposed himself to heavy enemy fire as he moved confidently about the battlefield engaging and destroying multiple enemy targets.?

Previously reported:?"He's always been a good kid."?

All the while, Romesha devised a strategy to secure key points of the battlefield and directed air support to eliminate a band of thirty heavily armed enemy combatants.

A look at heroes from a post-9/11 era of war

Romesha and his team also provided cover so three injured soldiers could make their way to an aid station. They then ?pushed forward 100 meters under withering fire to recover the bodies of their fallen comrades,? according to the citation.

Romesha, a father of three and the son of a Vietnam veteran, reportedly never lost his composure during the chaotic attack, according to CNN journalist Jake Tapper, who chronicled the battle in the 2012 book "The Outpost."

'Clint is a pretty humble guy'
During his remarks, Obama recognized the lives of the eight soldiers who died at the Battle of Kamdesh, asking the parents of the fallen seated in the back of the room to stand for applause.?

But the heart of Obama's speech centered on a visibly emotional Romesha, who appeared to be fighting back tears as he looked ahead at his wife, Tammy, and three young children.

Colin Romesha, the young son of Medal of Honor recipient Clinton Romesha, finds time to explore the White house while attending a ceremony for his father on Monday.

"Clint is a pretty humble guy," Obama said. "The thing he looks forward to the most is just being a husband and a father."

Romesha is slated to be a guest of first lady Michelle Obama at the State of the Union address on Tuesday, CNN reported.

At a January news conference shortly after Obama called to inform him that he would receive the Medal of Honor, Romesha put the attention squarely on wounded friends and fallen comrades.

"I've had buddies that have lost eyesight and lost limbs," Romesha said. "I would rather give them all the credit they deserve for sacrificing so much. For me it was nothing, really. I got a little peppered, that was it."

Romesha, whom Tapper describes in his book as "an intense guy, short and wiry," lives in Minot, N.D., and works at KS Industries, an oil field construction firm.

A total of ten U.S. service members have been awarded the military's highest honor for actions in Afghanistan and Iraq, including six men who received the honor posthumously.?

The Medal of Honor is bestowed on members of the U.S. Armed Forces who display what the Army calls "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty."
