Swampscott Shaw Estate Fourth of July parade celebrates 69 years

?

It has happened every Fourth of July for the past 68 years in Swampscott. Residents jump out of their beds, awakened by a siren. They hurry downstairs, weary-eyed from the fireworks the night before and trudge outside to get a better view.

Police and fire vehicles lead the way. Then come the firecrackers, the Uncle Sam?s, the rowdy bikers and the costumed dogs. What is the explanation for this motley crew of patriotic revelers? Why, it?s the Shaw Estate parade, of course!

Volunteers have organized the parade, which began during World War II, since its inception. It has become a neighborhood tradition for residents in the Shaw Estate area ? a section of town that includes Aspen Road, Lexington Circle, Magnolia Road and surrounding streets.

?I have lived in this neighborhood for 31 years,? said Linda Morrison of Forest Avenue. ?It is something that my children were involved in, and now my grandchildren take part in it as well.?

Heidi Santo of Danvers returns to her parents? Aspen Road home every year to take part in the parade. She said that, as a child, ?It was all very exciting. We got to dress up in our costumes. The anticipation was best. I bring my kids back so they can experience that excitement. We don?t have it in my neighborhood, and it meant so much to me. I wish every neighborhood had it.?

Sara Kuzmin of Lynn also returns to town every year to watch the parade. She said that she comes because she loves ?the sense of community.?

?It is not the Fourth of July without the Shaw Estate Parade,? Kuzmin said.

Perhaps it is that sense of community that has allowed the parade to last as long as it has. Records indicate that throughout the years, committees of parents and children have worked collaboratively to ensure the ongoing success of the neighborhood tradition.

Eva Berry, who has lived on Aspen Road since 1973, said she couldn?t remember a year when the parade did not happen. She recalled a former Aspen Road resident, Nate Green, as someone who was particularly involved with the cause many years ago.

?He always managed to find something special, some kind of treasure, that he could give to the kids,? said Berry. ?One year he gave every child spools of thread. It was just the little something that made the day extra special.?

Berry has had her turn at organizing the parade.

?My neighbors and I were all involved when our kids were young,? Berry said. ?You do it because the kids just love driving their crazy things in the middle of the street. It makes the day special.?

She enjoys watching her grandchildren participate now, and afterwards she cooks a giant breakfast for family and friends, all of whom return every year to watch the parade, she said.

Parade chairwoman Sheila Yang said that while the parade has remained popular for many years, citizen interest in helping organize the event seems to be waning.

?People are just really busy, so they are reluctant to take on more responsibility,? Yang said. ?We need to get more parents involved to keep this tradition going.?

This year marks the 69th anniversary of the parade and the event?s enthusiasts hope the tradition will continue for many years to come.

?It is old fashioned, wholesome fun,? Santo said. ?Kids are growing up way too fast these days, and this is a way to keep that youthful spirit alive without the video games. It is something the whole family can do together, and the kids have the time of their lives doing it.?

This year?s parade will take place on Wednesday, July 4. Judging begins promptly at 9:15 a.m. on the corner of Aspen and Arbutus Roads. Prizes will be awarded in the categories of: horribles, floats, doll carriages, bikes and trikes, roller blades/skateboard/scooters and pets. There is no entry fee, but donations are accepted.

The parade is looking for additional committee members and a new chairperson. Anyone interested in helping should contact Sheila Yang at (781) 595-5395 or email sheilayang@verizon.net.

Hulu lands major HBO deal? in Japan

Hulu just announced a major content partnership with HBO for its Japanese subscription service that will make episodes of shows like Entourage, Sex and the City and The Sopranos available to Japanese audiences. Shows will be available on Hulu Japan for a limited time, and the release will be staggered: Viewers will be able to watch the first season of Sex and the City starting in July and through September, with episodes of the second season becoming available in August and the third season popping up on the service in September.

Hulu?s SVP of International Johannes Larcher announced the deal on the company?s blog, where he also said that the content offered by Hulu Japan has grown by 300 percent since its launch less than a year ago. From his blog post:

?The amount of content available to subscribers overall has increased by more than 300% since the service launched in September 2011. There are now more than 800 films and nearly 6,900 TV show episodes from 24 content providers. And we have continued to heavily invest in creating original subtitles for TV shows that have never before been available in Japan, including new series like ?Sons of Anarchy?, ?The Office? and ?It?s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.?

Hulu?s Japanese service is subscription-only, and the company lowered its price earlier this year to increase demand. Larcher said that Hulu now has 19 people working in Japan.

U.S. users of Hulu shouldn?t hold their breath for HBO content coming to the service any time soon. The shows added to the Japanese catalog are all part of the DVD window, and HBO has been successfully established its own online service HBO Go in the U.S. ? and access to that offering is limited to cable TV subscribers who also pay for HBO access as part of their cable bill.

Southern Maryland: Is Your Business Disaster Ready? | eTrepid

While Southern Maryland is still suffering through the devastating effects of an earthquake, hurricane, and subsequent flooding from last year, we?ve already entered the 2012 hurricane season. Considering these disasters are likely to happen again, it is important to make sure your business has a continuity plan and disaster recovery plan in place. ?Preparing before a disaster strikes can help you to mitigate some of the more common and devastating effects from compromising your business, such as financial and information loss. ?Either one can be severely debilitating to an underprepared business.<br /><br />
Since 1972, Southern Maryland has suffered nine devastating hurricanes, averaging about one major hurricane every 4.3 years. Our businesses are at a greater risk for natural disaster than the national averages because of our proximity to the bay and rivers. According to a Ross Study, there is a less than 10% survival rate for companies that have experienced a disaster without a disaster plan. Natural disasters are not something that can be prevented; however, they are something your business can prepare for. ?Preparing your business for a natural disaster consists of a written plan that all employees know, an asset protection plan, proper insurance and back-up power sources. However, studies have shown in most cases a business disaster can simply be the result of human error, a power outage, hardware, software, or network failure. Being in the age of digital resources and data, we often times overlook having an IT plan.<br /><br />
IT firms can ensure the prosperity of your business by providing you with a business continuity and disaster recovery plan. It is important to find an IT firm that specializes in these two things in order to reduce your risk of encountering work stoppages, unnecessary closure and loss of revenue or data. These types of firms should provide your business with an IT plan that consists of a disaster recovery audit of your inventory, record of how long your business can function without power and a plan to help your business work through a disaster. According to Jim Garvin, a business continuity expert and the Director of Operations at eTrepid, Inc., a local IT consulting and management firm, ?when developing a business continuity and disaster recovery plan the most important step to take is to test the back-ups in place and verify in the event of a disaster [you] are able to recover what has been backed-up.? ?Studies show, most companies that aren?t able to recover their lost data often end up shut down completely or left with insurmountable debt.<br /><br />
We know the Southern Maryland area is prone to Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Earthquakes, and flooding; with hurricanes being the most destructive. Therefore, it is inevitable that history will repeat itself and we will encounter at least one of these natural disasters this year. It is essential to take in account the fact that manmade disasters can affect the functionality of your business as well. And even though we can?t prevent all disasters, with the right preparedness plan we can mitigate the loss and risk of damage disaster can bring upon our businesses and lives. <br /><br />

Local football coach charged with felony grand larceny

Dale Sexton, a Holland Patent varsity softball coach and newly appointed head varsity football coach was arrested Wednesday on charges of felony third-degree grand larceny, the Oneida County Sheriff?s Office said.

Sexton, 43, is accused of taking money given to him to pay for his father-in-law?s medical bills and using it for his own purposes.

?His father in law was sick, had cancer, and he took money from him,? said Assistant District Attorney Bernard Hyman.

An investigation was stated after Sexton?s father-in-law contacted the District Attorney?s Office, and Sexton was arrested Wednesday.

In April, Sexton was appointed head varsity football coach, a title which comes with a $3,405 stipend.

?He is not presently working for the school as we speak, he was appointed for the fall,? Holland Patent Superintendent Kathy Davis said. ?Once we?ve discussed with the board of education, we?ll make the best decision for the students.?

Hyman would not disclose how much Sexton allegedly took, but in New York, a third-degree grand larceny charge indicates that the alleged amount stolen is more than $3,000.

Sexton was arraigned Thursday and sent to Oneida County jail on $25,000 bail. He will return to Trenton Town Court on July 2.

(AP) ? Stocks were little changed in early trading on Wall Street on Tuesday, following a big loss the day before. Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. surged after the media conglomerate said it was considering splitting into two companies.

The Dow Jones industrial average edged down 12 points to 12,490 in the first hour of trading, giving up an early gain of 41 points. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index inched up a point to 1,315.

Homebuilder stocks rose after a measure of national home prices rose 1.3 percent in April from March, the first increase in seven months.

The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index showed home prices rose in 19 of the 20 cities tracked by the survey. That's the second month prices have risen in a majority of U.S. cities. PulteGroup rose 35 cents to $9.58 and Lennar rose 96 cents to $25.54.

News Corp. jumped 7 percent after the company confirmed it is contemplating a breakup into two companies, separating its publishing and entertainment businesses. The sprawling media empire includes The Wall Street Journal, Fox News Channel, and newspapers in Britain and Australia. The stock jumped $1.50 to $21.59.

Apollo Group, a for-profit education company which operates the University of Phoenix, soared 10 percent after the company reported third-quarter income that was far larger than analysts were expecting. The stock rose $3.27 to $35.75.

In other trading, the Nasdaq composite index rose six to 2,842.

U.S. markets were held in check by more worrisome developments in Europe. Spain's borrowing costs rose in a pair of short-term debt auctions, the latest sign that investors are hesitant to lend the country money. Spain's main stock index plunged 4 percent, the second day of steep losses, and the yield on its benchmark 10-year government bond rose to 6.69 percent.

The slump in Spanish financial markets came a day after 28 Spanish banks were downgraded by Moody's, a credit rating agency.

Stock markets slumped in the U.S. and Europe on Monday after Spain's formal request for help for its banking systems left many questions unanswered, including how much money it would ask for. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 138 points.

Facebook draws user ire with email switcheroo

In yet another change that irked users, Facebook has replaced the email address you picked to display on your profile page when you signed up for the online social network with an (at)facebook.com address. (AP) ? In yet another change that upset users, Facebook has replaced the email addresses users chose to display on their profile pages with (at)facebook.com addresses.

Previously, users may have displayed their personal yahoo.com or gmail.com address to let people know how to contact them outside of Facebook. Now, Facebook has hidden those addresses and put a Facebook email listing in its place.

The changes raised users' suspicions. By hiding other email addresses Facebook can keep its already-captive audience even more captive. Sending an email to a Facebook.com address will land the email in the messages section of a user's Facebook profile. The more people use Facebook to communicate, the more the company can target ads based on the conversations they have on its platform ? just as Google targets ads to Gmail users based on text in their emails.

"They've got an email service that no one is using," said Forrester analyst Nate Elliott. Getting people to send emails to and from Facebook deepens people's connection to the site, he added. "This is a way of encouraging use ? it's just a rather crude way."

The email change was first pointed out by bloggers over the weekend and publicized by media outlets Monday. The exposure led to gripes from users, mostly on their Facebook pages and on Twitter.

In a statement, Facebook said it is giving users Facebook.com email addresses "because we find that many users find it useful to connect with each other, but using the Facebook email is completely up to you." It added that the email address people use to log in to Facebook or receive notifications won't change.

Users who are bothered by the change can reset their profile. Facebook didn't delete the previously displayed email addresses. So, to revert back to the original address, click on the "about" section of your profile. Once there, look for "Contact Info" and click on the edit icon on its right hand corner. There, you can change who can see your email address and which email addresses they can see.

The Facebook.com email address allows users to communicate with outside email addresses via Facebook, but it's unclear how many people use the feature. Popular as Facebook has been with more than 900 million monthly users, its messages and posts have not replaced email, texting and other forms of communication. According to comScore, Facebook visitors spent an average of 381 minutes (or 6.35 hours) on the site last month.

The company started giving its users Facebook.com email addresses back in 2010, but only in the last few months has it begun to display them on people's profiles. In an announcement that went largely unnoticed, it said in April that it was "updating addresses on Facebook to make them more consistent" across the site. To Facebook consistency meant switching everyone to a Facebook.com address.

Over the weekend, Facebook added a feature that lets users change what contact information is displayed on their Timeline directly from the Timeline ? without having to go into their account settings. In rolling out this change, the company defaulted everyone's displayed address to Facebook.com.

"Ever since the launch of Timeline, people have had the ability to control what posts they want to show or hide on their own timelines, and today we're extending that to other information they post, starting with the Facebook address," Facebook spokeswoman Jillian Stefanki said in an email late Monday.

Menlo Park, Calif.-based Facebook is well known for making changes to its website that occasionally irritate users. Some users are still holding off on switching their old profile pages to the Timeline, which lists users' shared life events, updates and photos in chronological order, dating back to their birth. In 2006, there was a big uproar over a now-central feature of Facebook, the news feed that tells people what their friends are doing.

"It's pretty emblematic of Facebook's mode of operation. Take action and apologize later," said Debra Aho Williamson, an analyst at research firm eMarketer. "They seem like they pulled the trigger without telling everybody. It's going back to the way they were operating a few years ago."

Why Americans Admire Small Business | Best Outsourcing Partners

A new survey reveals that in tough economic times small business owners made impressive sacrifices to keep their businesses afloat and their employees paid.

shutterstock images

While the pace of the current economic recovery may be up for debate, one thing is certain: The last few years have been rough for many small-business owners. The credit crunch and the anemic growth that?s followed the recession it caused mean most consumers have kept their wallets securely in their pockets and created some seriously lean years for small businesses. How did entrepreneurs and owners respond?

With sacrifice, according to a new edition of Citibank?s small business survey that asked 750 American small business owners about their level of optimism, as well as exactly how tough the situation has been for them during the recent recession.

The poll found some uptick in owner optimism, though it?s hardly time to break out the champagne to celebrate a robust recovery. Forty-three percent of small business owners told Citi business conditions were positive for this year?s survey. In August 2010, just 24% of small business owners surveyed said the same. One-third of respondents said their own business is better than it was a year ago. That?s up from 26% when the question was asked in January.

These modest increases in optimism can only be a good thing, but another section of the survey was more noteworthy. Citi also asked about how owners weathered these challenging years, finding that many small businesses were under serious threat. But the survey also uncovered a cheering level of personal sacrifice among owners.

Sixty-three percent of owners reported experiencing personal stress due to being accountable for everything, while 66% said the general state of the economy had caused stress. Such widespread stress is unsurprising considering the sacrifices the owners told Citi they had made:

  • 78% took less profit to support the business at some point and 66% did so to pay employees rather than reduce staff
  • 70% said they worked more hours than usual, sacrificing family time and missing vacations
  • 69% used their own money to help their business survive
  • 54% have gone without a paycheck; over the history of their businesses, 23% have gone without pay for one year or more

This admirable commitment to keeping staff working and the doors open is surely one of the reason small businesses are so admired in this country. (Gallup found?95% of Americans said they had positive feelings about small business in 2010. By contrast just 30% express satisfaction with the size and influence of major corporations.)

This willingness to sacrifice hasn?t gone unnoticed by staff either. Eighty percent of small business owners told Citi they believe their employees appreciate the sacrifices they made to keep their businesses running. ?The level of appreciation shown to small business owners by employees and customers is uplifting,? said Maria Veltre, Managing Director, Citi Small Business.

Did you have to go without pay to get through the worst years of the recession?

University of Colorado at Boulder

The California condor is chronically endangered by lead exposure from ammunition and requires ongoing human intervention for population stability and growth, according to a new study led by the University of California, Santa Cruz, and involving the University of Colorado Boulder.

Since 1982, the condor population has increased from 22 to approximately 400, but only through intensive management including captive breeding, monitoring and veterinary care. The bird's recovery has been deceptively successful as its primary threat -- poisoning from lead-based bullets ingested as fragments from carrion -- has gone largely unmitigated, according to the study.

"We will never have a self-sustaining wild condor population if we don't solve this problem," said lead author Myra Finkelstein, a research toxicologist at UC Santa Cruz. "Currently, California condors are tagged and monitored, trapped twice a year for blood tests and when necessary treated for lead poisoning in veterinary hospitals, and they still die from lead poisoning on a regular basis."

The California condor, which once numbered in the thousands in the western United States and Mexico, is the largest land bird in North America.

Reintroductions since the bird's near extinction in 1982 have led to free-flying populations in Arizona, California and Baja California. Dubbed "thunderbird" by American Indians, its impressive wings can span more than 9 feet. A type of vulture, the creature's bald head allows feeding without the mess of carcass flesh sticking to its plumage.

The study, published this week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, shows that annually from 1997 to 2010, 20 percent of the California condors sampled suffered lead poisoning and needed chelation therapy, a metal detoxification process that also is used for children with lead poisoning. Cumulatively over the time period, nearly half of the population tested was poisoned by lead, with many birds suffering repeat poisoning within and across years.

"Lead exposure and poisoning levels in condors continue to be epidemic," said co-author Dan Doak, a new endowed chair and professor in CU-Boulder's Environmental Studies Program. "Despite the current efforts to help the species, the wild population will decline again toward extinction in a few decades unless these unsustainable and very expensive efforts continue in perpetuity."

From 1997 to 2010, the annual prevalence of lead exposure -- with blood lead levels indicating potentially serious but nonlethal effects -- ranged from 50 to 88 percent in California condors in the wild. Also, the annual median blood lead levels in free-flying California condors exceeded the average for pre-release condors bred in captivity by at least threefold.

The researchers found no evidence that a partial ban on the use of lead-based ammunition in condor habitats, enacted in California in 2008, resulted in lower incidence of lead exposure and poisoning. Although alternatives to lead-based bullets are available, regulations limiting the use of lead-based ammunition face stiff opposition from hunting organizations and gun-rights groups, according to the researchers.

The estimated cost of a multiagency condor recovery program including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is about $5 million per year, according to the researchers.

"Integrating a study of the effects of toxic chemicals on individual wild animals into a modeling of whole-population impacts is very unusual," said Doak. "But the results provided a critical piece of our results in this study."

ASUS N56VM gets Ivy Bridge processor, Kepler GPU for Japan launch

ASUS' N- and K-series notebooks may have debuted under the discerning eyes of Milano fashionistas, but it looks like an already refreshed version will arrive in Japan stores first. The ASUS N56VM benefits from recent hardware refreshes from both Intel and NVIDIA, with a Core i7-3610QM 2.3GHz processor and NVIDIA's GeForce GT 630M running the graphics-heavy show. This is joined by a 15.6-inch (1920 x 1080) screen, 8GB of RAM, Blu-ray drive and a 750GB hybrid SSD, while connectivity includes four USB 3.0 ports and a combination memory stick / SD card slot. The notebook is set to arrive this Saturday in Japan, with prices starting from 99,800 yen ($1,240).

It's accompanied by two lower-spec K55A and K55VD models, with the major difference between them being the addition of an NVIDIA GeForce GT 610M in the latter. Otherwise, the two pack the same 15-inch WXGA (1366 x 768) screen, Core i5-3210M 2.5GHz processor and 750GB HDD. The laptops also house a pair of USB 3.0 ports, with an SD card slot and a single USB 2.0 port in reserve. The K55A is priced at 59,800 yen ($744), while the K55VD starts at 69,800 yen ($869), with both arriving alongside the N-series model tomorrow.

Wikipedia is editorial warzone, says study

23 hrs.

The Internet is a wonderland for sociologists, and one of the richest areas of study is Wikipedia, with its years of open?collaboration and communication?archived for posterity. But with collaboration comes conflict, and the "edit wars" that embroil hot Wikipedia?topics are dissected in detail in a new paper by researchers in Budapest.

Though the study does not make for exciting reading, there are some interesting revelations about the way such conflicts run their course, and the people who make it all happen.

After they establish criteria for a "controversial" article?(rather than articles that?are edited frequently merely because the topic requires it), the researchers unearth a few commonalities?right away:

  • Whether an article gets a dozen or a thousand edits in a month, they tend to be "bursty" ? that is, many edits tend to cluster together as editors add, revise, correct and, if necessary, remove new information. Both "homosexuality" and "Lady Gaga" follow this trend (below), though due to the huge amounts of updates the performer has every month, it's a bit harder to tell. Edits don't happen like drips of water from a cave ceiling, gradually forming a stalagmite. Rather, they come on?like flash floods and leave new landscapes in their wake.
  • Edit wars are frequently conducted between a few extremely vociferous individuals. While dozens of editors may contribute to an article over any given period of time, it is often a much?smaller number of highly opinionated editors who contribute the bulk of the edits, often redoing or removing each other's work. Below, you can see many lines representing interactions between editors in a discussion section; thicker lines represent more interactions, and red indicates negative opinions. Clearly the individuals at 11 and 3 o' clock have contributed more than their fair share to the discussion, and appear to be mostly?yammering at each other.
  • In theory, many articles initially considered to be controversial would level out in terms of edit rate, and over time crystallize - but only if no new events spark further interest. Below, you can see a graph of the total number of edits to Michael Jackson's entry, with salient points marked such as his acquittal?(A)?and death (D). Other highly edited entries showed similar signs of flattening out, but often would surge into action again following key events. The pace of news, not to mention the frequent arrival of opinionated editors, renders peace a forlorn hope.

If you're interested in the methodology and math behind these interesting points, you can read the entire paper online at PLoS One, but you'll need a solid foundation of statistics to understand it. On the other hand, you can investigate the topic yourself by going to any Wikipedia page and clicking the "Talk" or "View history" buttons at the top. The discussion of the entry can at times be as worthwhile to read as the entry itself.

It's well-known that information on Wikipedia is essentially peer-reviewed opinion, and this study shows just how lively?those peers ??and that review process???can be. But while the details are constantly under heated debate, the result is often a compromise that cleaves very closely to fact, despite being the middle ground between several ideas of the truth.

Coast Guard: Similarities in Texas, NJ hoax calls

(AP) ? The Coast Guard believes there could be a link between a hoax distress call reporting a yacht explosion off New Jersey earlier this month and a mayday call in Texas last month, an official said Wednesday.

There's no guarantee it was the same man making the calls, but "enough similarities" in the voice and phrasings have led the Coast Guard to investigate the possibility, Capt. Gregory Hitchen said.

A voice expert has been analyzing the calls.

"The voices are indeed similar," the captain told a news conference.

The New Jersey hoax call came in around 4:20 p.m. on June 11. The caller claimed there were three dead, nine injured and 20 in the water off Sandy Hook, N.J.

Nothing was found, and authorities later determined the call came from land.

On May 20, the Coast Guard searched for six people reported missing after a mayday call saying they were abandoning their sinking fishing boat in the waters off Galveston, Texas.

Hitchen said similarities between the two calls include the fact that both came over a high-frequency channel to the Coast Guard "vessel traffic service," not the search and rescue center usually used for distress calls.

The caller in both cases said he was using a "beacon" to describe a hand-held automatic signaling device.

The captain said the caller used "unique language." In addition to words like "souls" describing those supposedly on board, the man in both calls said his antenna was down, and he therefore could not give a precise position. And in both cases, the Coast Guard was told that the people on board were getting into an orange life raft.

Hitchen said the cost to taxpayers of responses to false distress calls runs into thousands of dollars, at least. The "Blind Date" yacht rescue effort topped $300,000, he said. He had no immediate estimate for the Galveston rescue operations, which lasted 36 hours.

The captain said Coast Guard investigators noticed that details in the calls indicated the man "knew a lot about internal Coast Guard operations that you wouldn't find from a typical boater."

But he said he doesn't believe the perpetrator ever worked for the Coast Guard, because of terms like "souls" a mariner doesn't usually use.

Hitchen said all such hoaxes "divert assets from real emergencies."

During rescue efforts for the "Blind Date" hoax, there was one other distress call reporting a person in the water off Bayonne. The Coast Guard responded but found no one. They didn't have a problem mobilizing personnel because it was a small incident, but Hitchen said that if the agency had to respond to a more serious situation at the time, it would have been a scramble.

He said it's important the public be aware of these developments, "so we can generate new leads."

Without witnesses, Hitchen said it's very difficult to solve such cases, but hoax perpetrators "do brag about it in certain cases" ? and he hopes that might happen again.

Axl face-plants during GNR show, plus other falls

By Anna Chan

Oh Axl Rose. You're clearly not the spry, energetic young rock star you once were at the height of Guns N' Roses' fame. When the latest version of the band performed at Hellfest in France on Saturday, Axl fell face first onto a platform on stage during "Sweet Child o' Mine."

Keep your eyes on the right side of the stage:

Sure, the veteran performer recovered quickly, but perhaps he wasn't feeling so hot on this tour. A full video of the Saturday gig on YouTube revealed a totally uninspired performance of "Sweet Child" by the GNR frontman. (The clip was later yanked, but here's a performance of a similar energy level from Axl on April 6 in the Netherlands.) That fall would've been totally excusable had he been channeling a?smidgen?of the energy he once had on stage. But instead of running, jumping and dancing around vigorously as he once did, the frontman strolled slowly back and forth during the performance of one of the band's biggest hits. No wonder the crowd seemed to lack energy as well. (No dancing at a rock show? No moshing? What is this world coming to?!?)
