Facebook ready to face losses when it declares its first quarterly earnings since IPO valued company at $100bn

By Tom Goodenough

|

Facebook is expected to post losses when it declares its first quarterly earnings this week since going public.

The technology giant's disappointing performance follows on from one of the most closely watched initial public offerings of all time in May.

Since being launched, however, Facebook shares have fallen in value and closed on Friday at $28.76 (?22.38) - almost $10 below their initial price.

Market observers are awaiting Thursday's declaration with interest to see how investors feel about the stock since a mostly disappointing start.

More than half of the 36 financial analysts dealing with shares in the company do not rate Facebook as a 'Buy' - historically the threshold needed to encourage investors on Wall Street to part with their funds.

?

Shares in the company have repeatedly lost ground after investors questioned the company's ability to rapidly increase its advertising revenue, particularly in relation to revenue from mobile phones.

Technical problems with its market debut on Nasdaq were also to blame for a disappointing start after the initial fanfare.

Facebook Inc. became the first American company to ever go public with a valuation of more than $100billion.

And the initial public offering made the company's founder 29-year-old Mark Zuckerberg a fortune overnight.

But Michael Binger, a fund manager for Gradient Investments which owns stock in Facebook, says the real test is yet to come for the company.

'If they miss, it would be catastrophic for the stock,' he told Reuters.

'This is a very important earnings quarter for them.

'It will establish in people's minds how they think of the company.'

Despite the jitters amongst some investors, however, there are also reasons for optimism.

The social media site still has over 900million users and has introduced a variety of new advertising features in a bid to beef up its revenue.

TBG Digital, which works with advertisers using the? site, showed that the cost of promoting products and services on Facebook has increased by almost 60 percent in the last year.

And the site's ability to allow companies to specifically target their customers means that the site is likely to remain popular with advertisers.

(AP) ? Investigators looking for clues to the motive behind a deadly shooting rampage inside a movie theater sought once again Saturday to enter the suspect's elaborately booby trapped apartment, warning it may mean removing trip wires that could detonate the explosives, as the Denver suburb grieved for the dozens of victims.

The FBI and Homeland Security Department said there was no information indicating more shooting sprees were planned at movie theaters around the country, according to an intelligence bulletin obtained by The Associated Press.

Twelve people were killed and 58 were injured in the attack early Friday at the packed Aurora theater outside Denver. A few of those suffered injuries not by gunfire but in the chaos that ensued as the audience tried to flee the smoke-filled theater in a panicked dash for the doors, authorities said. Among the wounded, 11 were listed in critical condition.

After the shooting, police arrested James Holmes, 24, and determined his nearby apartment had been booby trapped, then ordered residents in the building and surrounding homes to evacuate.

Scores of law enforcement officials, including local bomb squad technicians and dozens of federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents gathered again at the apartment Saturday and planned to enter.

"It's safe right now with the evacuations so we don't want to rush anything," said Aurora police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson.

The apartment contains trip wires and jars that may contain accelerants, she said, noting authorities may be forced to detonate the explosives, which could cause a loud boom and a fire.

Police grimly went door to door late Friday with a list of victims killed in the worst mass shooting in the U.S. in recent years, notifying families who had held out hope that their loved ones had been spared.

The deceased victims included 23-year-old Micayla Medek, said Anita Busch, the cousin of Medek's father. The family took the news hard, but knowing her fate after waiting without word brought them some peace, Busch said.

"I hope this evil act, that this evil man doesn't shake people's faith in God," she said.

Besides Medek, relatives confirmed that Alex Sullivan and Jessica Ghawi were among those killed, Sullivan on his 27th birthday.

It remained unclear Saturday what drove the suspect to fire round after round at the unsuspecting audience watching "The Dark Knight Rises." Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said Holmes used a military-style semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and a pistol that he had bought at local gun stores within the last two months. He also recently purchased 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the Internet, the chief said.

The suspect's stellar academic record, apparent shy demeanor and lack of a criminal background made the attack even more difficult to fathom.

It also wasn't known why the suspect chose a movie theater to stage the assault, or whether he intended some twisted, symbolic link to the film's violent scenes.

The new Batman movie, the last in the trilogy starring Christian Bale, opened worldwide Friday with midnight showings in the U.S. The plot has the villain Bane facing Bale's Caped Crusader with a nuclear weapon that could destroy all of fictional Gotham.

In New York City, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said: "It clearly looks like a deranged individual. He has his hair painted red. He said he was the Joker, obviously the enemy of Batman."

Oates would not confirm that information, but did say he spoke to Kelly. The two used to work together in New York. Asked whether Holmes had makeup to look like the Joker, Oates said: "That to my knowledge is not true."

Near the entrance to the theater's parking lot, a makeshift memorial of 12 candles sat in a row alongside piles of flowers. Up the hill, about 20 pastors led a vigil for about 350 people, some hugging and crying. A sign read, "7/20. Gone Not Forgotten."

An emotional Gov. John Hickenlooper said earlier Friday that people would not be defined by the tragedy.

"We are clear that we are going to rise back and lift ourselves above this," he said.

A federal law enforcement official said Holmes bought a ticket to "The Dark Knight Rises," went into the theater as part of the crowd and propped open an exit door as the movie was playing. The suspect then donned protective ballistic gear and opened fire, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the investigation.

Authorities said Holmes shot scores of people, picking off victims who tried to flee. At least one person was struck in an adjacent theater by gunfire that went through the wall. Adding to the terror and chaos were two gas canisters thrown by the suspect that filled the theater with smoke.

Tanner Coon, a 17-year-old Aurora resident who was watching the film with two friends, said he first thought the gunshots were firecrackers. When he realized what was happening, he ducked between seats and waited for the shooter to bark demands.

"When is he going to start telling us what to do? When is this going to become a hostage situation?" Coon said.

When the firing ended, Coon said he started running up the row but slipped in blood and fell on a woman who was lying on the ground. He tried shaking her, he said, but she didn't respond, so he left her behind and ran from the theater.

Within minutes, frantic 911 calls brought some 200 police officers, ambulances and emergency crews. Holmes was captured in the parking lot.

Kaitlyn Fonzi, a graduate student at University Hospital who lives in the apartment below, said she heard loud music coming from the suspect's unit just after midnight. She went upstairs and put her hand on the door handle. She felt it was unlocked, but she didn't know if he was there and decided not to confront him.

Fonzi called police, who told her they were busy with a shooting and did not have time to respond to a noise disturbance. She said she was shaken to later learn the apartment was booby trapped.

"I'm concerned if I had opened the door, I would have set it off," she said.

The shooting was the worst in the U.S. since the Nov. 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas. An Army psychiatrist was charged with killing 13 soldiers and civilians and wounding more than two dozen others. It was the deadliest in Colorado since the 1999 attack at Columbine High School, where two students killed 12 classmates and a teacher and wounded 26 others before killing themselves.

Holmes had enrolled last year in a neuroscience Ph.D. program at the University of Colorado-Denver, though he left last month for unknown reasons. In academic achievement, "he was at the top of the top," recalled Timothy P. White, chancellor at the University of California, Riverside, where Holmes earned his undergraduate degree before attending the Denver school.

Those who knew Holmes described him as a shy, intelligent person raised in California by parents who were active in their well-to-do suburban San Diego neighborhood. Holmes played soccer at Westview High School and ran cross-country before going to college.

Police released a statement from his family Friday that said, "Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved."

How to take spectacular photos of your car with your iPhone

Is your car your pride and joy? Do you regularly dedicate hours of your time to washing and detailing your beautiful vehicle? Have you secretly dreamed of hiring a photographer to take professional photographs of your most prized possession? Then this tutorial is for you! This installment of iMore's photography series is all about cars and how to get the most spectacular photos of your car with your iPhone's camera.

Choose a nice environment

Nothing will ruin a photo of a beautiful car more than an ugly environment. How can your viewers soak in the beautify of your car if it's surrounded by a distractions like messy garages, driveways, parking lots, or car dealerships. In every car magazine, the photos of car are showed off in locations that enhance the overall appearance of the car, not that distract from it. You should do the same. I'm not going to deny that this will probably be the hardest part about getting an awesome photo of your car, but it's so worth it.

I wasn't too thrilled with the location I chose to take photos of my car for this article, which is why I chose jammer148's photo for this section instead. (Thanks jammer148!)

Clean your car

The above photo is an example of the type of photo you do not want to show off. What's the first thing you notice? The pile of dust on my bumper? Yeah, me too. Any level of dirt on your car will stick out like a sore thumb, so make sure you give it a good washing before taking it out for photos. In my case, most of the dirt appeared on my car while getting to the location, so I recommend bringing some car wipes and touch-up cleaning supplies with you to take care of situations like this. You can't predict what will happen -- like getting stuck behind some jerk who sprays you with windshield-wiper fluid (I hate that!).

Now, there is one except to this rule -- vehicals that are meant to be dirty. For example, perhaps you take your truck four-wheeling in the mud. If that's you, then you want the opposite of clean. Go take your truck out on an adventure, then take photos. Just make sure you take the photos in the appropriate environment. A filthy truck in a driveway looks like a filthy truck in a driveway. A filthy truck out in the hills and a mud puddle looks bad ass.

Interesting angles

Your average person will take a photo of their car by stepping back until their vehicle fits in the frame, then snap the picture. Don't be average. Get creative with your angles. Get low. Get high. Add tilt. Step a little to the left. Aim not to take a snapshot of your car, but a portrait of your car. Little things like turning the wheels of your car will also add interest and dimension to the final photograph. I recommend taking a look at some car enthusiast websites and magazines for inspiration before taking your car out for its big photo shoot. You can even save examples you like in your Camera Roll to reference.

Get the details

Some of the most interesting aspects of a nice car is in the details, so make sure you get some photos focusing on them. Are you particularly proud of the specific model of car you have? Focus on that. How about those alloy wheels, fancy sport shifter and pedals, and detailed stitching in your leather? What about the engine? Get it all! Everyone knows what the outside of a corvette looks like, but not everyone has had the opportunity to sit in one and take in all the details -- show them what they're missing. And again, make sure those details are spotless; whip out the Q-tips if you have to!

Go wide

Most professional car photographers use wide angle lenses when photographing cars because it adds dimension and a creative look to their photographs. If you own an external wide-angle lens accessory for your iPhone, bring it along for your car's big photo shoot. If you don't, you can achieve a similar effect with panoramic photography apps like Autostitch.

I used an olloclip to take the above photo.

HDR

HDR photography with cars is very popular and can result in an interesting look, so make sure you experiment with this idea! If it's a sunny day with lots of harsh shadows, I definitely recommend using the built in HDR feature in your iPhone's Camera app. This will help make skies bluer and bring out details that are in the dark. But if you're interested in getting creative with more drastic effects, head to the App Store and try out some apps specific for HDR photography. The above photo was taken by the winner of our car photography contest winner and he used the app HDR Fusion to achieve this look.

Examples

We recently had a car photography photo contest and received a lot of great submissions, so make sure you take a look at the official car photography contest thread in the forums for inspiration.

Now go out and shoot!

Now that you're all prepared for taking the most spectacular photo of your car, put it to practice! And when you do, please share your results in the iMore photography forum. Above all -- have fun!

How Silk-Screening Is Applied to Pins

Most people connect the process of silk-screening to tote bags and garments like T-shirts. It is the one way to get a uniform design that has to be duplicated many times. It is important to understand this basic process to properly understand how silk-screening is done for pins.

Silk-screening is done using a flat woven mesh screen stretched onto a wooden frame. Like wood block printing, the screen areas that are to be printed are open to allow ink to pass through the screen onto the surface of a shirt or bag. The rest of the screen is blocked so that ink will not come through.

Silk-screen artists must go through a process to make the image that will be transferred ready for printing. Sometimes they receive artwork that is nearly perfect. At other times, there is quite a bit of tweaking that has to be done to make the art sharp enough to use for printing. Most now use a software program like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop to make outlines of the text and separate all the colors in the design.

Next a film positive is used to create a stencil of the design in black ink. A different stencil is made for each color in the design. An emulsion that is sensitive to photos is spread over the mesh screen using a squeegee and sits overnight to dry. Once the emulsion dries, the film positive is placed very carefully onto the emulsion. The photo-sensitive solution on the screen helps the artwork image burn onto the screen. When the screen is rinsed with water, open mesh areas appear where the color will go.

Silk-screen printers use a squeegee and special inks to push color through the mesh screens and onto a printed surface. This has to be repeated for each color, and a single color ink must be allowed to dry before moving on to the next color. When all the colors have been screened, it is time to cure the shirt to make sure the colors set. Often a large professional dryer does the job of curing.

Silk-screening on pins works the same way as the traditional process. Instead of cloth, aluminum, brass or stainless steel is used as the surface. Brass is often the preferred metal for pins because it can be plated in silver or gold. Stainless steel and aluminum cannot. Silk screens and rollers are used to print multi-color designs onto pins. Some companies bake the pins in a large oven to set the color and then apply a coating of varnish to protect the colors from chipping or other damage.

There will be flaws in the final product if silk screens are not properly cleaned or prepared. One of the most common is small pinholes where no color appears. This is usually caused by a small, almost microscopic gap in the emulsion or a particle that may be stuck on the surface of the pin. The emulsion problem is solved by placed transparent tape over the spot so that no color bleeds through. If the particle on the pin is removable, taking it off the pin is the only way to ensure even coloring. This kind of trouble can be discovered by holding the screen up to light to inspect it before the printing process begins.

Another common problem is fish eyes. It happens when the emulsion separates from the screen. Fish eyes look like round spots in the final color and are sometimes a result of not degreasing the screen or allowing it to properly dry. Degreaser in a spray bottle and a scrub brush make it easy to degrease screens. Some silk-screen professionals also use pressure washers to degrease.

Silk screened pins are a popular choice for companies who want to push a logo or slogan in increase brand awareness. The process lends itself easily to complex color designs and duplication. Some silk-screening companies make it easy to reproduce logos that bleed onto the metal edge and do not leave too much of a metal border. Many companies have strict policies about reproducing exact replicas of logos. Most lapel pins are individually wrapped before they are delivered to customers.

Although the silk-screening process dates back to ancient Chinese dynasties, it is an artistic endeavor that requires much patience. The wait for drying and coating the screens with emulsion can be trying. The end result, however, is always worth the wait. Pins come out with crisp color and very close to the original design.

Chapman: The weird GOP attacks on Obama

If I were conspiracy-minded, I'd suspect Barack Obama has deployed several moles to sabotage his opponent. Take John Sununu, who yesterday attacked the president for having used drugs, spent time abroad and lived in Chicago. Or Phoenix Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who now claims to have proof Obama's birth certificate is a fraud. Mitt Romney's aides are vowing to expose Obama's past, insisting he wasn't "vetted" the last time around. If I were David Axelrod, I'd be smiling.

Why? Because we've heard it all before. It didn't keep Americans from electing Obama in 2008 and it won't stop them this time. These claims do resonate with some voters -- but only those who wouldn't vote for Obama if he were running against Vladimir Putin.

Most Americans just won't buy it. The president's personal approval ratings have consistently held up even amid our economic mess. A recent poll found that by a more than 2-to-1 margin, they find him more likable than Romney. Americans know Obama well by now, and they aren't going to change their minds about him as a person in the absence of powerful new information, which Republicans don't seem to have.

Smearing him doesn't raise doubts about the president. It raises doubts about the Republican party, which runs the risk of sounding like an arm of Fox News. If the GOP can explain how Obama's particular characteristics are responsible for the poor state of the economy, non-Republicans will listen. But if it focuses on trying to demonize him, they'll tune out.

The debate on the economy is one Republicans can win. But right now, they're debating whether Obama is a sleazy pol, a drug-using punk or a Kenyan. And that's a debate Democrats will be more than happy to have.

Canadians' debt burden to get worse, Bank of Canada warns

OTTAWA ? Canadian households will see their debt burden worsen further in coming months even after the government stepped in to tighten mortgage rules, the Bank of Canada said on Wednesday, pointing to signs of ?overbuilding? in the housing market.

The warning came as the central bank downgraded all of its quarterly economic growth forecasts until the second quarter of 2013 to reflect weaker-than-expected domestic demand. On Tuesday, the bank held its benchmark interest rate at 1% but signaled it may need to raise rates.

Some investors are betting Carney will cut rates as the world?s 10th largest economy is dragged down by Europe?s fiscal crisis and a prolonged U.S. recovery.

Asked about Canada running counter to other countries, Carney said ?global monetary policy isn?t a cut-and-paste,? adding ?there is a very small amount of excess capacity in the economy, rates are at 1%, they are very low.?

The central bank said measures introduced in June to curb mortgage borrowing would help make the housing market more sustainable, but it still showed concern.

?Despite the lower forecast for household spending ? the bank continues to expect further increases in the household debt-to-income ratio in coming quarters,? it said.

The debt-to-income ratio of Canadian households soared to an all-time high of 152% in the first quarter as ultra-low borrowing costs have lured more people into buying homes as prices in some cities rose sharply.

The central bank, which says the trend is the top domestic risk to the economy, said in its quarterly Monetary Policy Report that the pace of growth in household credit had slowed this year and consumer spending would likely be weaker than it had anticipated last quarter as global economic troubles bite into incomes and wealth.

But housing investment remains robust due to construction of multi-family buildings and home renovations, taking a toll on household finances.

?While growth in household spending has been moderate in recent quarters, it has been disproportionately supported by housing investment, which is around historical highs and showing signs of overbuilding,? the bank said.

The bank sees economic growth troughing in the second quarter at an annualized 1.8%, down from its 2.5% projection in April. It sees growth of 2.0% and 2.3% in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.

The 2012 revisions largely reflect weaker-than-expected government spending, business investment and consumer spending while the outlook for net exports improved slightly.

The bank sees inflation at 1.7% in the second quarter, 1.2% in the third and 1.6% in the fourth whereas previously it expected 2% inflation or higher in those periods.

May business inventories climb 0.3 percent; sales drop

Newly assembled 2013 Ford Escapes sit on plant lots ready to be shipped out to dealers at the newly transformed Louisville Assembly Plant in Louisville

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Business inventories rose in May as motor vehicle dealers restocked to meet demand, although sales at companies edged lower for the second straight month, the Commerce Department said on Monday.

Inventories increased 0.3 percent to $1.58 trillion, after rising by an downwardly revised 0.3 percent in April.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast inventories rising 0.2 percent in May.

Inventories in May were lifted by a 1.9 percent rise in restocking by auto dealers, in line with strong demand for motor vehicles from households earlier this year.

Inventories are a key component of gross domestic product changes. Retail inventories outside of autos - a measure which goes into the calculation of gross domestic product - rose 0.6 percent.

However, inventories at manufacturers dipped 0.2 percent in May. That was in line with recent signs of weakness at American factories.

Business sales edged 0.1 percent lower to $1.25 trillion in May, matching the prior month's decline. At May's pace of sales, it would take 1.27 months for businesses to clear shelves, the highest in a year and up from a 1.26-month pace in April.

Positive aspects of Vector Graphics in Graphic Design ? Mo-Mo ...

Pictures participate in an important role in every type of graphic design. Whether you see a business card as well as an internet site format, a person will realize that photos supply the design an aesthetic appeal along with provide the concept efficiently. You will find generally two types of photographs, raster as well as vector. That they may look exact same to a person nevertheless raster and vector photographs are very different at core. A vector graphic is manufactured of internally connected points and its particular resolution unbiased. Graphic makers make use of vector graphics in his or her graphic design projects credited to the numerous benefits it includes.

1. Easy to Design- You can very easily produce a vector picture making use of Corel Bring or Adobe Photo shop. These types of software are usually user friendly so you can design stunning photos using their different equipment. The profit of a vector graphic is that although it can end up being created effortlessly, anyone will get a rich output.

2. You Can Range It Along or even Expand It- This really is the greatest edge of graphics. Most graphic design authorities utilize vector format for designing logos simply because the graphic doesn?t perspective once you modify its dimension. The consumer will naturally make use of his / her corporate and business logo in sizes along with in various places. A vector graphics never ever loses that quality when it?s bigger or even scaly lower to a scaled-down dimension.

3. No Graphic Distortion- If you try out to enhance a raster image, that receives pixilated and also the impression manages to lose its details. Even so, whenever you increase the size of a vector impression, it never ever receives fuzzy. A person can expand a vector graphics to virtually any size you would like to with out having to worry regarding the picture quality.

4. Enhancing Is actually Easier- Whenever you modify an impression, you do not need to revise the comprehensive graphic. The components of a vector graphics can become modified individually plus it helps make the job trouble free. Choose the components you desire to revise and work on that without affecting the rest of the design.

5. Small File Size- Image posting and also downloading it is actually a serious problem in internet site development. If the website readers get to wait for a long time just to notice an graphic, that they will leave your site. Vector photos are extremely small in measurement, compared to raster photographs. Usually when you use a vector picture in your site layout, the idea a lot considerably quicker and also is a convenience to the target audience.

6. Very best for Detailed Illustrations- If you?d like to pull an in depth case in point of a product, it?s constantly better to attract a picture.Their employ spots and collections, understanding that assists you to to create sharpened designs.

7. Seems Great While Printed- An additional main gain of vector graphics isn?t that merely it appears excellent in web, but in art print at the same time. Once you design your art print ad in vector format, anyone can end up being be assured that the ad will maintain it?s look and feel.

8. Visually Pleasing- A vector picture constantly seems apparent and keeps their quality in any dimensions. Should you alter the measurement of a bitmap image, it will lose its look and feel, yet a vector impression will keep the cosmetic beauty.

9. Wonderful for Animation and Caricatures- The clarity of vector impression causes it to be an best selection for animation as well as caricatures. Should you be developing a business demonstration, anyone can use vector graphics in it as well.

Boson-spotter's guide helps you decode the Higgs

Celeste Biever, physical science news editor

The elusive Higgs boson, or something very close, has finally been spotted at CERN's Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, Switzerland. The next challenge is to pin down whether the new particle is the boson physicists were expecting or some other beast.

One of the first things physicists want to know about the new particle is its spin, a quantum property that is analogous to the angle of the axis of rotation of a particle. They also want to know whether it has parity, a property most easily explained as whether a particle is identical to its mirror image - or more like your left and right hands. Perhaps most importantly, they will investigate seeming deviations in the rates that the Higgs decays to certain particles compared with the predictions of the standard model of particle physics.

All these things will help determine whether the new particle merely completes the standard model, offers hints to an elegant, more comprehensive extension - supersymmetry - or demands something else totally new.

You can read more about all this - and what it means for physics - in our special report: Beyond the Higgs. To help make sense of the different options, and to illustrate just what the different possibilities are, we drew up the flowchart below:

07_2140712_2.jpg

It's not clear when we'll have answers to the questions - the best-case estimates say by the end of the year. In the meantime, take pleasure in the fact that almost anything is still possible.

Web design And also Internet hosting Blunders Which should be ...

tumblr gifs Here i will discuss a number of problems that will beginners online makes. See this as a studying option along with a way to avoid creating most of these problems, since causing them to will really end up being adverse to your success of one?s website. There are 2 sorts of problems which are popular: Techie problems as well as Administration problems. Let?s take a look at both and exactly how they may be definitely avoided. Techie problems happen coming from a lack of understanding in the World-wide-web and the techie ecosystem within that your World-wide-web functions. Ytumblr gifs ou must know you?re working within certain limitations on the net : that is harddrive space or room as well as bandwidth. One. Overlooking bandwidth standards. Data transfer rate is an essential the one which are going to have a visible impact. You will find there?s positive change beginning a picture or even papers for your community equipment as well as getting on the internet. In the event you position shots or even documents for your website which are large it will likely be very hard for ones visitors navigate your internet site as well as watch your internet webpages. Pictures particularly include the major root cause, since standard text fill up hardly any bandwidth. Almost all photographs as well as shots ought to be optimised online. The single best photo editor program (including the Microsoft ?office? Snapshot Boss) is important to complete couple of things: your) For you to scale the picture all the way down to ensure that it can certainly match on to an internet web page : photographs must not be greater than 500 p or maybe One thousand p vast. Complete ensure that you decide on to be able to support the proportion when you scale photographs all the way down so your image retains the correct levels. m) For you to resize the picture literally to ensure that it occupies fewer actual space or room. Jpeg photographs particularly could be saved from 60% to be able to 70% compression without worrying about human eye alone seeing it. Utilize Jpeg for sure lifestyle shots by using continuous colour variations, but alternatively employ GIFs for pulled images, bought hinders colour as well as text. Be careful if you are using Jpeg of these considering that the compression WILL be seen to your human eye alone. 2. Cluttering your internet-site by using photographs as well as animation. Be familiar with the latest design in web design. Never mess your internet-site by using lively gifs for instance the envelopes posting by themselves, revolving creatures or even just about any stealing attention components. These are typically very old fabricated in World-wide-web terms and conditions right now as well as rather than appealing to or even pulling awareness, these four elements will result in your internet-site visitors get away from : easily. 3 or more. Working with non-standard web site Avoid unique web site for your website. Each one well that you employ should be installed on just about every community equipment of one?s website visitor to your site and you will have zero ensure when you?re utilizing Acanthus in the web design, that each and each and every an affiliate everyone around you that opens up that will web page can also get this Acanthus well mounted. The effects might be unstable, unsurprisingly. Keep with web site which are common to almost all House windows as well as Macintosh personal computer installations. These are typically Arial, Tahoma, Verdana, TImes Brand-new Roman as well as Atlanta. Several. Certainly not developing your internet-site for engines like google. One common blunder is actually creating a website that will disregards search engine optimization wants. As a result engines like google tend not to record the web page inside their search engine results. Browsers tend not to advice about the existence of the web page and the website stays on not known. 5. Certainly not hosting your internet site that has a company that is definitely scalable. Some people variety sites by using companies that are usually not scalable. As a result when you?ve got outgrown your present bundle you can not enhance concerning bandwidth or even harddrive space or room. Scalability is an important requirement to become considered even though hosting sites. Usually, the web page cannot admit fresh guests as soon as the targeted visitors peaks. Administration problems happen coming from a lack of understanding in order to conduct business on the net. Conducting business online is not just a leisure activity, in fact, if you can?t notice as a considerable organization which will consume a lot of one?s time as well as resources, your internet-site will be unsuccessful. One. Deficiency of strategic plan Generate a clear strategic plan and to stick to it. This company system must not be empty if the organization gets better slowly in the beginning. As well, the project must be sure spending on advertising and marketing. You are going to must market your organization together with market your website if you would like really view a bang for your buck. A lot of companies result in the oversight regarding with regards to the How do people bring all of the advertising and marketing problem for that organization, although your website in fact wants its advertising and marketing spending plan in advance of it will set out to bring about favorably to your organization. You have to specify ones target group as well as buy advertising and marketing which usually focuses on these folks : both traditional and web-based. Fortitude as well as perseverance are essential, as you may not find fast results. Network by using family, buddies as well as co-workers likewise helps. Get yourself seen to your social networks. Prevent spamming, that includes a negative influence. 2. Certainly not making sure you?re planning for that toned times. tumblr gifs You may need the help of ones bank or some other origin that may supply temporary funds, assistance as well as resources. You will have to invest in your organization as well as re-invest when you finally set out to have some income. Online (products or services organization), things tend not to occur in a single day. It takes time to succeed. Generate a spending plan whilst keeping track of money movement. Before you decide to pay who you are a substantial earnings or even buy a car or truck, consider no matter if you are able to really have the funds for it. Your own organization, no matter if traditional as well as held up by an online site, or even no matter if entirely on line consumes a long time, electricity and money and you will have to be ready to get that will to be successful eventually.

Ouya's $99 Android-based gaming console meets Kickstarter goal: $950k in under 12 hours (update: it's a record)

The gaming public at large has spoken. In less than 12 hours, Yves Behar's Android-based Ouya gaming console has reached its lofty funding goal of $950,000 on Kickstarter. To refresh your memory, the $99 system (which was only $95 for 1,000 swift early adopters) packs a Tegra 3 CPU, 8GB of storage, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, a USB 2.0 port and an SD card slot -- that price also grants you a single controller with a touch sensor. Most notably, the system is aimed at being extremely developer-friendly, having open hardware and software with a push for free-to-play content. There are only about 5,000 units (out of 10,000) (update: that number has been bumped to 20,000, with just under 10K available) left at the $99 price, so feel free to check out our in-depth chat about Ouya with Behar himself here before you head over to Kickstarter. It appears that the traditional business model for gaming consoles just got rocked, and we can't wait to see the final results.

Update: If you thought that was fast, you'd be right: Kickstarter has confirmed that Ouya achieved the biggest first day ever for one of its hosted projects, and it's just the eighth project ever to crack the million-dollar mark, joining an esteemed company that includes Double Fine's upcoming adventure game and the all-time champion, the Pebble smartwatch.

Peter Higgs: Boson discovery like being hit by a wave

The last week must have been a bit of a rollercoaster ride for you. Did the announcement at CERN of what looks like the Higgs boson take you by surprise?
The week before all this started happening, I was at a physics summer school in Sicily. I didn't take any Swiss francs with me and my travel insurance policy expired the day I was supposed to fly back to Edinburgh.

As the week went on, rumours began to fly, but it wasn't until the Saturday before the announcement that we knew for certain that something was up. We got a phone call from John Ellis, the former head of theoretical physics at CERN, saying, "Tell Peter that if he doesn't come to CERN on Wednesday, he will very probably regret it." I said, very well then, I'll go.

How were you feeling at that point?
I was getting excited. The final confirmation that the good news was coming came the evening before the CERN seminar. We had dinner at John Ellis's house and he cracked open a bottle of champagne.

The teams on both ATLAS and CMS, the experiments looking for the Higgs particle, were 99.99994 per cent sure [a 5-sigma result, the "gold standard" for such work] that what they were seeing wasn't a fluke. Were you surprised that the evidence was so strong?
That was amazing, especially as in the weeks before, I had been visiting various high energy physics groups working on ATLAS or CMS, and everywhere the researchers were sure that CERN would not get to 5 sigma by the time of last week's Melbourne conference on high energy physics.

It was obviously an emotional moment when the announcement was made at the seminar last Wednesday.
I was asked by a journalist at the seminar why I burst into tears after the presentation. During the talks I was still distancing myself from it all, but when the seminar ended, it was like being at a football match when the home team had won. There was a standing ovation for the people who gave the presentation, cheers and stamping. It was like being knocked over by a wave.

How did you celebrate?
With a can of London Pride ale on the flight back to London.

It was 48 years ago that you came up with a mechanism to account for the existence of mass, predicting the Higgs boson in the process. But one of your first papers on the subject was rejected, many of your peers thought your ideas were wrong at first, and Stephen Hawking bet against the discovery of the boson. Do you feel vindicated?
Yes, well, it's nice to be right sometimes. I didn't expect it to happen in my lifetime, at the beginning. Things began to change when the big colliders were built ? LEP [the Large Electron Positron Collider, which was the predecessor of the Large Hadron Collider], the Tevatron and now the LHC. At the beginning no one knew what the mass of the Higgs would be, so it could have been too high for it to be discovered by these colliders.

Did you ever doubt that the particle existed?
No, I didn't really. It is so crucial for the consistency of the mechanism. You can remove the particle as a theoretical exercise, but then it becomes nonsense. I had faith in the theory behind the mechanism as other features of it were being verified in great detail at successive colliders. It would have been very surprising if the remaining piece of the jigsaw wasn't there.

At the moment, they are calling it a "particle consistent with the Higgs". The next step is to find out for sure that is what it is.
Yes. In one sense it is the end of the road, in that it's the last piece of the standard model to be discovered. But in another, it's the beginning of where machines like the LHC go next. The next stage of exploration will include measuring all the properties they haven't seen. Hopefully this will provide clues for things like supersymmetry, which could be a comprehensive way to go beyond the standard model because it provides a framework for things like dark matter.

Several types of Higgs particle have been proposed, fitting various theories of particle physics. Which do you favour?
I'm a fan of supersymmetry, largely because it seems to be the only route by which gravity can be brought into the scheme. It's probably not even enough, but it's a way forward to get gravity involved. If you have supersymmetry, then there are more of these particles. That would be my favourite outcome.

You have always been a rather reluctant science celebrity. Is there a sense of relief and a hope that maybe now the attention will die down?
Relief is certainly part of it. It is still too recent for me to have come out of the upheavals of the last few days. The best I can hope for, I think, is some spells of quiet. At the moment, that's not looking likely. My inbox and doormat are full with emails and letters from people who want me to endorse their Higgs board game or to inaugurate the walkway of their new office atrium. There's even a microbrewery in Barcelona which wants to know what my favourite beer is so they can brew a similar one in my honour. It is quite mad.

Eddie Miller and Yolanda McNair talks about their daughter, Adaisha Miller, in Detroit, Monday, July 9, 2012. The contact that came when Adaisha Miller hugged an off-duty Detroit police officer from behind caused his gun to go off, fatally shooting her in the chest, the police chief said Monday, July 9, 2012. Miller was celebrating what would have been her 25th birthday Monday. Chief Ralph Godbee called her death a tragic, "unfathomable" accident. "We are profoundly sad at their loss," he said, referring to Miller's family. Godbee said the gun was in a waist holster made of soft material, which would have allowed the trigger to be activated. (AP) ? The mother of a Detroit woman shot and killed while dancing with an off-duty police officer questioned Monday why he would carry a loaded gun at a party in his own backyard.

Police said Adaisha Miller was dancing with the officer early Sunday morning when she hugged him from behind. His gun, which was in a waist holster, went off, and the bullet punctured Miller's lung and hit her heart. She died at a hospital.

Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee described Miller's death during a Monday news conference as a tragic, "unfathomable" accident.

"Somehow, in the course of dancing with the individual to his rear and touching his waist, his Detroit Police Department-issued weapon discharged, striking Ms. Miller," Godbee said. "There is absolutely no indication that the officer placed his hand on his weapon at all."

Godbee implied contact from Miller appeared to have caused the gun to go off, but he stopped short of saying she pulled the trigger on the .40-caliber handgun.

The officer, 38-year-old Isaac Parrish, has been placed on desk duty while the case is investigated. There was no answer at his home early Monday afternoon. Godbee said Parrish is "very remorseful."

Miller was celebrating the weekend before her 25th birthday on Monday, said her mother, Yolanda McNair. She was invited to the Saturday night fish fry at Parrish's home by friends who knew him, McNair said.

"Why do you need a gun at your own house? Why do you need a gun at your own party?" she asked. McNair said she would be watching the police investigation closely.

Detroit police officers have the option of carrying their weapons while off-duty. The model issued by the department has a safety mechanism built into the trigger.

The Smith & Wesson M&P primarily was designed for police and military use. It does not have a safety switch, but the trigger has to be pulled back completely for the gun to fire, certified firearms instructor Rick Ector said.

Ector said that if properly holstered, the gun cannot be fired accidentally.

David Balash, a former Michigan State Police firearms examiner, said the investigation also should look at the gun's angle given that Miller was shot in the chest.

"What's going to be very important here is the angle of the entry of the wound to the victim (and) if there is in fact any gunpowder residue," Balash said. "I'm having a great deal of difficulty understanding how a weapon that's pointed at the ground can be turned literally 110 degrees minimum to be in an upward position to strike someone."

But Godbee said Parrish's waist holster was made of a soft, neoprene-type material, and it would be possible for the trigger to be pulled while the gun was in it. He also said the barrel direction typically would have been pointing down while holstered.

There still is "no justification" for her daughter's death, said McNair, 44.

"She didn't do anything wrong," McNair said. "She told us she was going to a party.

"I should have been baking my daughter her birthday cake."

The Wayne County medical examiner's office was to perform an autopsy.
