Your cotton T-shirt could soon charge your phone

17 hrs.

One day, donning a T-shirt could mean you're also sporting a smart device charger. Engineers have successfully transformed cotton into a flexible, highly conductive component, which means it could charge devices.

"In the future, you can imagine our cell phones will be just like a piece of paper you can roll up. But we need to have a flexible energy device to integrate with flexible, stretchable motherboards," said Xiaodong Li, a mechanical engineering professor at the University of South Carolina who led the development with postdoc Lihong Bao. Their article was just published in the journal Advanced Materials ( abstract ).

NEWS: Electronic Tattoo Grafts Gadgets to Skin

Li knows how to be creative with cotton T-shirts. In 2010, he and his colleagues converted one into lightweight body armor by converting the fabric into boron carbide nanowires. So when he began looking for a backbone to make a flexible energy storage device, he turned to a $5 cotton tee from Wal-Mart.

The engineers had to make the cotton highly conductive so they tried several "recipes," Li said. He compared their experiments with trying to replicate a restaurant meal at home without having seen the chef's preparations. First they dipped the cotton in a sodium fluoride solution for an hour, took the wet material and dried it in a preheated oven for three hours. Then they heated it in a hotter furnace for an hour.

By the time it was done, the cotton had changed into activated carbon. Despite being baked, the charred-looking material could still be folded. From there, the engineers coated it with a nano-layer of the conductive metal manganese oxide for the last stage of building their energy storage device.

??Lead researcher Xiaodong Li said his team knew that future body armor would need a flexible power source. And because the scientists work in South Carolina, which used to have a big cotton industry, they thought, 'Why not use a cotton T-shirt as the energy device?'?

??-- Li on his A-Ha! Moment? ? ?

Although others have used cotton in devices, Li said that to the best of his knowledge his research group is the first to activate a cotton T-shirt and build it into a super capacitor. Their device's performance is on par with other carbon-based super capacitors, according to their testing. After 1,000 cycles it had 97.3 percent retention.

"This is a very simple, low-cost process, and it's green," Li said. In addition to starting with a renewable plant-based material, he and his research group estimate that using cotton directly from textile mills could be as much as 10 times cheaper than chemically processing coal or petroleum into activated carbon.

To take his concept to market, the process needs to be scaled up. Li said that for this next phase, he's looking for a potential industry partner. He's also reaching out to state government leaders about using this process to help revive local textile production.

NEWS: Virus-Built Wearable Batteries Could Power Military

Reza Shahbazian-Yassar is an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Michigan Technological University who specializes in the application of nanomaterials for different forms of energy storage. He's familiar with the recent Advanced Materials journal article.

"The novelty of this work is that they have converted the fabric using simple heat treatment processes and a little bit of a chemical process," he said. Shahbazian-Yassar sees an advantage in clothing that contains convenient energy storage. Soldiers on the battlefield could use it in military applications, he added.

"The challenge of course is to improve the amount of energy that these fibers can store," he said. The material also has to be able to keep performing well after regular folding and stretching.

Li, who was recently in Beijing to give a presentation, said he envisions a time when academic conference attendees use roll-up electronic posters that include flexible power sources.

"I like to think about the big picture," he said. "Down the road, we will see such cotton-enabled energy devices in the market. We won't need to rely on oil any more."?

Video: Scientists start explaining Fat Bastard's vicious cycle

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Fat Bastard's revelation "I eat because I'm depressed and I'm depressed because I eat" in the Austin Powers film series may be explained by sophisticated neuroscience research being undertaken by scientists affiliated with the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre (CR-CHUM) and the university's Faculty of Medicine. "In addition to causing obesity, rich foods can actually cause chemical reactions in the brain in a similar way to illicit drugs, ultimately leading to depression as the 'come-downs' take their toll," explain lead researcher, Dr. Stephanie Fulton. As is the case with drug addicts, a vicious cycle sets in where "food-highs" are used as a way to combat depression. "Data shows that obesity is associated with increased risk of developing depression, but we have very little understanding of the neural mechanisms and brain reward patterns that link the two," Fulton said. "We are demonstrating for the first time that the chronic consumption of palatable, high-fat diets has pro-depressive effects."

A molecule in the brain known as dopamine enables the brain to rewards us with good feelings, encouraging us to learn certain kinds of behaviour. This chemical is the same in humans as it is in mice and other animals. The research team feed mice different kinds of food and monitored how the diet affects the way the animals behave. Fulton and her colleagues use a variety of scientifically validated techniques to evaluate the relationship between rewarding mice with food and their resulting behaviour and emotions. The team is also contributing to the improvement of these techniques, such as the one demonstrated in the video. Later, the team actually looks at the brains of the mice to see how they have changed.

Mice that have been fed a higher-fat diet exhibit signs of being anxious, such as an avoidance of open areas, and of being depressed, such as making less of an effort to escape when trapped. Moreover, their brains have been physically altered by their experiences. For example, CREB is a molecule that controls the activation of genes involved in the functioning of our brains and is well known for its contribution to memory formation. CREB is much more activated in the brains of higher-fat diet mice. Finally, these mice have higher levels of corticosterone, a hormone that is associated with stress.

Fulton and her team are part of a research network that is working together to address the biological reasons for obesity and its related diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, and of course depression. She is based at the Montreal Diabetes Centre, an institution associated with the CHUM and four Montreal universities that brings together facilities for clinical research, cell biology and microscopy research, and rodent physiology research, such as that involved in the depression study. "Although popular culture jokes about these illnesses and even mocks the people who are suffering, obesity is a serious and major public health issue that already affects hundreds of millions of people. As a society, we must avoid creating stigma and discriminating against obese and depressed people," Fulton said. "With regards to research, it is urgent that we identify the molecules and neural pathways involved in obesity and obesity-related illnesses. My colleagues and I are committed to identifying the brain circuitry involved in these diseases and to improving the tools available to researchers working in the same field."

Taking solar technology up a notch: New inexpensive, environmentally friendly solar cell shines with potential

ScienceDaily (May 23, 2012) ? The limitations of conventional and current solar cells include high production cost, low operating efficiency and durability, and many cells rely on toxic and scarce materials. Northwestern University researchers have developed a new solar cell that, in principle, will minimize all of these solar energy technology limitations.

In particular, the device is the first to solve the problem of the Gr?tzel cell, a promising low-cost and environmentally friendly solar cell with a significant disadvantage: it leaks. The dye-sensitized cell's electrolyte is made of an organic liquid, which can leak and corrode the solar cell itself.

Gr?tzel cells use a molecular dye to absorb sunlight and convert it to electricity, much like chlorophyll in plants. But the cells typically don't last more than 18 months, making them commercially unviable. Researchers have been searching for an alternative for two decades.

At Northwestern, where interdisciplinary collaboration is a cornerstone, nanotechnology expert Robert P. H. Chang challenged chemist Mercouri Kanatzidis with the problem of the Gr?tzel cell. Kanatzidis' solution was a new material for the electrolyte that actually starts as a liquid but ends up a solid mass. Thus, the new all solid-state solar cell is inherently stable.

"The Gr?tzel cell is like having the concept for the light bulb but not having the tungsten wire or carbon material," said Kanatzidis, of the need to replace the troublesome liquid. "We created a robust novel material that makes the Gr?tzel cell concept work better. Our material is solid, not liquid, so it should not leak or corrode."

Postdoctoral fellow In Chung in the Kanatzidis group worked closely with graduate student Byunghong Lee in the Chang group to develop the new cells, achieving performance gains that amounted to approximately 1 percent per month.

In the Northwestern cell, a thin-film compound made up of cesium, tin and iodine, called CsSnI3, replaces the entire liquid electrolyte of the Gr?tzel cell. Details of the new solar cell -- an efficient, more stable and longer lasting cell -- will be published May 24 by the journal Nature.

Kanatzidis, the Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Professor of Chemistry in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, and Chang, a professor of materials science and engineering at the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, are the two senior authors of the paper.

"This is the first demonstration of an all solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell system that promises to exceed the performance of the Gr?tzel cell," Chang said. "Our work opens up the possibility of these materials becoming state of the art with much higher efficiencies than we've seen so far."

The Northwestern cell exhibits the highest conversion efficiency (approximately 10.2 percent) so far reported for a solid-state solar cell equipped with a dye sensitizer. This value is close to the highest reported performance for a Gr?tzel cell, approximately 11 to 12 percent. (Conventional solar cells made from highly purified silicon can convert roughly 20 percent of incoming sunlight.)

Unlike the Gr?tzel cell, the new solar cell uses both n-type and p-type semiconductors and a monolayer dye molecule serving as the junction between the two. Each nearly spherical nanoparticle, made of titanium dioxide, is an n-type semiconductor. Kanatzidis' CsSnI3 thin-film material is a new kind of soluble p-type semiconductor.

"Our inexpensive solar cell uses nanotechnology to the hilt," Chang said. "We have millions and millions of nanoparticles, which gives us a huge effective surface area, and we coat all the particles with light-absorbing dye."

A single solar cell measures half a centimeter by half a centimeter and about 10 microns thick. The dye-coated nanoparticles are packed in, and Kanatzidis' new material, which starts as a liquid, is poured in, flowing around the nanoparticles. Much like paint, the solvent evaporates, and a solid mass results. The sunlight-absorbing dye, where photons are converted into electricity, lies right between the two semiconductors.

Chang chose to use nanoparticles approximately 20 nanometers in diameter. This size optimizes the device, he said, increasing the surface area and allowing enough space between the particles for Kanatzidis' material to flow through and set.

Technically, this new cell is not really a Gr?tzel cell since the hole-conducting material CsSnI3 is itself light absorbing. In fact, the material absorbs more light over a wider range of the visible spectrum than the typical dye used in Gr?tzel cells. In the Kanatzidis-Chang cell, the CsSnI3 plays an additional role in the operation of the cell that is not played by the liquid electrolyte couple, and that role is light absorption.

"This is only the beginning," Chang said. "Our concept is applicable to many types of solar cells. There is a lot of room to grow."

The lightweight thin-film structures are compatible with automated manufacturing, the researchers point out. They next plan to build a large array of the solar cells.

The paper is titled "All-Solid-State Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells With High Efficiency." In addition to Kanatzidis, Chang, Chung and Lee, the other author of the paper is Jiaqing He, from Northwestern.

The National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy and the Initiative for Energy and Sustainability at Northwestern (ISEN) supported the research.

For Pulmonary Hypertension, Inhibition Of PBEF Is A ... - Kiefit.com

Inhibition of pre-B Cell Colony-Enhancing Factor (PBEF) could be a potential therapeutic target for pulmonary hypertension (PH), according to a preclinical study in an animal model of PH. "PBEF expression appears to be significantly increased in PH. Accordingly, we examined whether inhibiting PBEF could prevent and reverse PH in rats," said Roberto Machado, MD, associate professor of medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago...

FDA Panel Backs At-Home HIV Test

TUESDAY, May 15 (HealthDay News) -- A U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recommended Tuesday approval of the first HIV test that would give people the results in the privacy of their own home.

The 17 panel members were unanimous in voting that the benefits of the test were greater than any possible risks. The test kit, known as Oraquick, detects the presence of HIV -- the virus that causes AIDS -- within 20 minutes, the Associated Press reported.

If the FDA heeds the recommendation of its advisory panel, the decision could pave the way toward a new era in HIV testing. The agency typically follows the recommendations of its advisory groups.

OraSure Technologies Inc., which makes the over-the-counter test, already sells a version of it to doctors and other health professionals. Studies have shown the test was less accurate when used by consumers, but the panelists said Tuesday that the benefits of expanding HIV testing outweigh a small drop in test accuracy, according to the AP.

"There is huge global momentum in support of over-the-counter testing for HIV. People desire private, discreet options that protect their confidentiality," said Dr. Nitika Pant Pai, an assistant professor of medicine at Montreal's McGill University who co-authored an analysis of the effectiveness of an at-home HIV test earlier this year.

The test, which looks for signs of HIV in oral fluid, is already used at hospitals and doctors' offices where medical professionals administer it. The FDA first approved its use in 2004.

To take the OraQuick test, people swab their outer gums and put the swab into a vial. After about 20 minutes, the test device will reveal two reddish-purple lines in a small window if there are signs that the body's immune system has geared up to battle HIV.

The test uses oral fluid, which is not the same as saliva. Its results are considered preliminary, and should be confirmed by a blood test.

OraSure had nearly 5,700 people take the at-home version of the test. The tests found that 114 thought they were HIV-positive; 106 of them actually were. That means that positive results were accurate 93 percent of the time. Negative results were accurate 99.98 percent of the time, the company said.

Pant Pai said the oral test's overall accuracy is similar to that of a blood test, although it's slightly less accurate. The oral test, in particular, may miss HIV infection in its early stages, she said.

Also, "the sensitivity of the test appears lower when administered in the home setting rather than a medical setting, so some of the people who are HIV-positive will get a test result that they are negative," said Jane Rotheram-Borus, director of the Center for HIV Identification Prevention & Treatment Services at the University of California, Los Angeles. "However, if they would otherwise not have gotten the test at all, they may also have believed they were negative."

Experts have expressed concern for people who learn at home, possibly alone, that they are probably infected with the virus that causes AIDS.

"The arguments against the at-home test focus on the absence of a counselor who could provide support and link the newly identified HIV-positive individual to medical care," said Rotheram-Borus, who supports over-the-counter sales of the OraQuick test.

She pointed out that "over-the-counter pregnancy tests are widely used, and pregnant women do find their way into prenatal care."

Orasure has said it will offer a 24-hour toll-free number that people can call to get support regarding their test results.

The comnpany has not determined the over-the-counter price of the test yet.

Insight: Swing states: Could Europe decide the U.S. election?

NAVARRE, Ohio/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The busy shop floor at Miller Weldmaster Corp could make a great location for an Obama campaign ad.

As workers assemble the family-owned company's hot-air fabric welders, used to manufacture everything from inflatable rafts to truck tarps, it's hard to know the recession of 2007-2009 ever happened.

Ten clocks on the wall of the plant in Navarre, Ohio, show local time from Norway to New Zealand and tell Miller Weldmaster's comeback story in a word: exports. Sixty percent of the company's business now comes from outside the United States.

Manufacturing growth, surging exports: These are central promises of Obama's reelection bid, especially in blue-collar industrial states that could determine the election.

Mindful of the Indiana surprise of 2008, when a spike in unemployment helped Obama win the reliably Republican state, the White House has every reason to fear payback in states like Ohio, this time from any deepening of Europe's financial crisis.

Already there are warning signs. One in four of Miller Weldmaster's machines is sold in Europe, and sales are down 5 percent so far this year. A further drop could force the company to consider layoffs.

"We've taken a sigh of relief - we've been over the crunch," says Jeff Sponseller, the company's vice president of sales and marketing. "The chance that this could happen again brings a lot of anxiety."

Other Ohio manufacturers share that concern. Royal Phillips Electronics, which exports X-ray machines from a 1,200-employee facility near Cleveland, warned in April that budget cuts and other austerity measures in Europe could hurt demand for its products. Glassmaker Owens-Illinois Inc, based in Perrysburg, said Europe's volatility could hit its earnings as well.

The U.S. Commerce Department estimates that more than a quarter of all manufacturing workers in Ohio depend on exports for their jobs.

Against this backdrop, the Obama administration has been involved in intense, behind-the-scenes maneuvering to steer Europe away from the financial brink.

For the past two years, Treasury officials, including Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, have crisscrossed the Atlantic in pursuit of solutions to Europe's problems. The president has also been actively involved, speaking to European leaders by phone at key moments in the region's crisis.

His instant invitation to France's newly elected president, Francois Hollande, to White House talks on the eve of this weekend's Group of Eight summit is evidence of a central fact in the United States: The states that will do most to determine the outcome of November's presidential and congressional elections may not be swing states like Ohio but member states of the European Union.

On condition of anonymity, a senior EU official told Reuters it felt as if the Obama administration wanted the G8 to cooperate in the reelection campaign. "They see the debt crisis as the biggest likely drag on the U.S. economy between now and November," the official said, "and so they basically want to make sure that we find a way of muddling through."

FRANTIC SHUTTLE DIPLOMACY

U.S. officials say Europe's woes are already weighing on the U.S. economy, which grew at a tepid 2.2 percent in the first quarter of 2012.

Rather than a hit to exports, the real nightmare scenario for U.S. businesses, banks and policymakers alike would be a chaotic unraveling of the euro zone's financial system on the scale of the crash that followed the failure of U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers in 2008.

Then, banks in the United States and beyond were pushed to the verge of collapse by a seizing up of credit, strangling the global economy and more than halving the value of U.S. and global stock markets. The psychological impact demolished consumer confidence as well as the economic track record of the Republican administration, helping hand an historic election victory to Obama.

For the sake of the U.S. economy and the election that no doubt hangs on it, the White House has no wish for history to repeat itself.

Late last year, as U.S. and European officials alike worried the entire single European currency area might fall apart, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner embarked on a frantic round of shuttle diplomacy.

Between September and December he flew to Europe five times, sometimes passing through several capitals in a day. Those directly involved say conversations with senior policymakers were often blisteringly blunt.

Officials say the strategy has been clear: to explain what is at stake for the global economy, to offer up lessons from how the United States moved to fix its banks, and to push Europe to do whatever is necessary to hold itself together.

Geithner in April made a fresh call on the European Central Bank, which has been less aggressive than the U.S. Federal Reserve, to help alleviate the crisis.

Even when Europe's worries eased in the first few months of 2012, U.S. officials continued talking to their European counterparts on an almost weekly basis.

"We've been heavily and steadily engaged with them from the outset," Under Secretary to the Treasury for International Affairs Lael Brainard told Reuters. "It's too important for our exporters and our workers not to be."

Brainard, the lead U.S. official on the issue, is already planning her next trip to Europe. It will be her ninth since September.

HOW PERSUASIVE A PRESSURE?

When U.S. officials first raised serious worries over the potential survivability of the euro zone at a meeting of finance ministers from the G7 advanced economies in Canada's frozen north in February 2010, they say European leaders simply did not grasp the potential scale or impact of the crisis.

Amid the igloos and the dogsleds - and questions over why Canada decided to host the event in such a costly and inaccessible location - they outlined their fears of a potential new crisis.

Since then, they complain, euro zone leaders have struggled time and again to get ahead of events, only to settle on measures that would be too little, too late.

Officials from both sides of the Atlantic with knowledge of these discussions say that even those agreements came after last-minute U.S. pressure, often culminating in direct intervention by Geithner and Obama himself.

Without such pressure, these sources say, the May 2010 meeting in Brussels, which agreed on the first 110 billion-euro bailout for Greece, might never have reached that conclusion.

U.S. officials say they were also instrumental in persuading Europe to perform much stricter stress tests on its banks.

Without the personal intervention of Obama, one Washington insider suggested, former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero might never have accepted that his troubled economy could no longer sustain its economic stimulus and needed to confront its budget deficit.

Not everyone in Europe agrees that European policy owed quite so much to U.S. pressure. Much of what Washington wanted, they suggest, was already in the works.

"In terms of the conversations, I think they were effective," said one well-placed European diplomat on condition of anonymity. "But everyone was already aware of the need to address these issues. They were pushing at an open door."

PRESIDENTIAL TOUCH

The next European leader to get Obama's personal attention will be Francois Hollande. When Obama phoned him to congratulate him on his election victory on May 8, Hollande found himself invited to the White House much sooner than he or French officials had planned.

Given Hollande will be attending the meeting of G8 leaders this weekend and a NATO summit that immediately follows, his meeting with Obama on Friday has a practical logic. But analysts and officials say there is little doubt the U.S. president will use the opportunity to try to build rapport and stress again the importance of European cohesion.

During his campaign, Hollande sharply criticized German Chancellor Angela Merkel for her focus on austerity to solve the debt crisis. Yet on Tuesday, in a visit to Berlin hours after his inauguration, the two leaders agreed to a joint approach even as they acknowledged their differences.

On the timing of Hollande's visit to Washington, "obviously, there is an element of convenience here," said Philip J. Crowley, a former State Department spokesman under the Obama administration. "But there is also a sense of urgency. European decisions could potentially intrude on the U.S. election."

Hollande's "pro-growth" agenda is more aligned with the Obama administration's own stimulus spending than that of his predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy, who supported the German-led "fiscal pact" that ties euro zone members to tough spending rules. Yet the United States is anxious that Hollande soften his election pledge to renegotiate the pact, potentially jeopardizing the rest of a meticulously negotiated crisis plan.

Finding a compromise between the focus of Paris on growth and Berlin's insistence on austerity could be easy when compared with the far more difficult decisions that confront Europe.

Greece faces elections in June that could determine its chances of staying in the euro zone. Should it leave, fears will intensify that other countries could follow suit. If Germany wants to preserve the euro, it may have to decide how deeply to underwrite the more troubled Mediterranean states.

"We have much less influence over Germany, where policy is driven by domestic politics," said Tyson Barker, a Europe specialist and fellow at the Truman National Security Project who says he talks to administration officials most days. "In Greece, which itself might be on the edge of political collapse, I'd say we have no influence at all."

REPUBLICANS READY TO POUNCE

At home, Obama's hands are largely tied.

Any new U.S. funding to the International Monetary Fund, which could be used to help fight the euro zone crisis, is considered a nonstarter: With many voters still simmering over the 2008 Wall Street bailout, more U.S. funding for Europe would play straight into Republican hands.

Republicans have tried to revoke $100 billion in previously authorized IMF emergency funding. Although the measure was defeated in the Democratic-controlled Senate, party leaders could still generate awkward headlines for Obama by pushing it in the House of Representatives.

"We haven't seen a willingness by the European Union countries to change their addiction to government spending and borrowing," says Republican Representative Cathy McMorris Rogers, who is leading that effort. "It doesn't make sense to be funneling billions of dollars to bail out Greece, Portugal, Ireland, and other wealthy European countries."

Advisers to Mitt Romney, Obama's most likely challenger in November, argue that Obama's poor stewardship of the U.S. economy has left the United States exposed to the euro zone crisis and limited the administration's ability to respond.

"We think the Obama administration has limited credibility in Europe because they so badly mismanaged our economy here," said Kristen Silverberg, a former ambassador to the EU who advises the Romney campaign on European policy.

In reply, Obama's defenders argue that the recession in several European countries provides proof that his aggressive stimulus effort saved the United States from a deeper slump.

"When President Obama says, 'Look, we stabilized the financial system, we put in stimulus and the economy walked back from the brink of collapse' ... it's very hard to do the counterfactual. But now, Europe is the counterfactual," said Laura D'Andrea Tyson, a former economic adviser to President Bill Clinton who also served on Obama's jobs council.

Some say that argument will be too complicated to make on the campaign trail.

"Most voters aren't thinking about any of this," said Paul Krugman, the Nobel Prize-winning economist who wants further big stimulus spending in the United States. "Voters have children, they have lives, they have jobs. They're not interested in this stuff except insofar as they want to know if the economy's getting better."

RECOVERY AT RISK

Back in Ohio, jobs are easier to find than they were a year ago. The state's unemployment rate, at 7.5 percent, is at its lowest point since before Obama took office.

Miller Weldmaster is hiring electricians and welders, and a natural-gas boom is luring some workers away with the promise of six-figure incomes.

Still, memories of the recession are vivid, and the company is redoubling its marketing efforts to keep the gathering storm in Europe from eroding its sales further.

"When things get slow, the first thing that goes off people's list is capital equipment," Sponseller says. The political fallout from such a downturn, as John McCain discovered in Indiana four years ago, can make all the difference.

The electoral calculus for the 2012 campaign is brutally straightforward. "In good times incumbents are rewarded," says David Cohen, a political science professor at Ohio's University of Akron. "In bad economic times incumbents are punished."

Demi Lovato Confirmed As 'X Factor' Judge

Lovato and Britney Spears expected to be at Monday (May 14) Fox upfront event.

America will meet the rebooted panel of the "X Factor" on Monday and filling the fourth slot at the judge's table will be Demi Lovato. The 19-year-old Disney star is expected to make the announcement of her high-profile gig on Monday at the Fox network upfront presentation, which will also officially reveal the worst-kept-secret in TV: that Britney Spears has joined the show as well.

Lovato is one of the many names
that has been in the mix for the gig, which at one point also included Avril Lavigne, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey.

TMZ confirmed that Lovato has scored the gig, which will put her on alongside series creator Simon Cowell and music executive L.A. Reid when the show comes back for its second season in the fall.

Last week, Spears finalized her deal, which will reportedly pay her $15 million
for one season's work. Spears and Lovato replace Paula Abdul and former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger, who were fired in January after the first season of the heavily-hyped show failed to live up to Cowell's lofty expectations. Both Lovato and Spears are expected to be on hand on Monday when Fox announces the show's new lineup at its upfront presentations.

Though Lovato has a summer tour planned
, those dates will reportedly not conflict with her new duties on "X Factor."

A spokesperson for "X Factor" could not be reached for comment at press time.

Last week, MTV News asked some media experts whether the move to "X Factor" makes sense for Spears and the general consensus was that it did. "I think it is a good move, actually," said Entertainment Weekly
writer Tanner Stransky. "I think she has so many people on her team watching what she's doing and being careful. I think nobody would let her take a misstep, but I think it's the right move right now."

The only concern is how the reclusive star might deal with the increased scrutiny and requirement to think on her feet on live TV. "I think everyone is a little concerned, simply because Britney has been very press-shy since she's been in her conservatorship, and everything is incredibly guarded and incredibly controlled," said Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts at Billboard. "And there can be uncontrollable moments on 'The X Factor,' and if things are not completely in control and things are not rehearsed, things could go wrong. With a live show, anything can happen, and that can be very exciting but, at the same time, a little worrisome."

Lovato and Spears, 30, are the kind of young singers that "X Factor" producers were seemingly looking for to give the show a more youthful appeal and share their experience with contestants. Both are former child stars who've struggled with personal issues
and neither has experience appearing on live network television.

Matsunichi's MarquisPad MP977 tablet tempts us with $249, dual-core Android 4.0

Image

You might remember Le Pan's tablets from CES this year, of which only one was truly ready at the time. The company is now ready to hit the US in earnest, but you'll have to forget the company name along with the earlier designs: it's now Matsunichi, and it's planning to kick off its US-ready makeover through the MarquisPad MP977. The tablet shares the 9.7-inch, 1024 x 768 display of the Le Pan II, but it's now running a slightly speedier dual-core, 1.2GHz TI chip (likely the same OMAP 4430 as in the Droid Xyboard), ships with Android 4.0 out of the gate and comes in a sleeker -- not to mention browner -- shell. Storage is being cut in half over the Le Pan II to just 4GB between the internal memory and a bundled microSD card, though, and the battery is good for a very modest five hours. Nonetheless, the $249 sticker and a May release will put the MP977 in the running with the slower but more capacious Galaxy Tab 2 7.0.

Matsunichi also teased us with a roadmap for a pair of future tablets in the process. The 10.1-inch MP1010 will keep the resolution, but it'll run on a quicker 1.5GHz TI processor and carry a total of 10GB of space when it appears sometime between June and August. If those 0.4 inches of extra glass are just too much to bear, an MP979 will bring all the extra storage and speed of the MP1010 to a 9.7-inch screen sometime between August and September.
