Ad Agency BBH Moves Into Social Gaming, Seeks Developers Who Like Lollipops

Bartle Bogle Hegarty today became the latest company to make the leap into social gaming, and it is on the lookout to give seed funding to social gaming developers who want to make the jump with them. The ad agency's Asian division, BBH Asia Pacific, has opened a new venture, Chuck Studios, which will be run in partnership with one of its longtime clients, the confectionery giant Perfetti Van Melle -- makers of Chupa Chups lollipops. Together, the two will invest in social games promoting the brand, in exchange for a share of whatever revenue is made from the content. The first product of the venture, Chupa Chucker, made in partnership with studio Atommica, goes live today on Facebook. Future games will also run on iOS, Android, and HTML5, BBH tells us. "The only requirement is that the numbers have to check out."

Nook Tablet coming to Walmart with less storage and a lower price tag?

One of the things that has kept the Nook Tablet from hitting Kindle Fire-like heights has been the price tag. Sure, $250 is super cheap for a rather well specced slate, but when the Amazon's entry is a full $50 cheaper it spells trouble. Now it looks like B&N is getting ready to tangle a little more directly with the online retail giant by cutting the Nook Tablet's storage in half to 8GB and slashing the price. Details are pretty slim at the moment, but it does appear that Walmart will be selling the device starting February 22nd, this Wednesday. Sadly, we'll have to wait till then to find out just how much cheaper it'll be and, whether or not the Color will be receiving a corresponding price drop.

Chatting with Jan Latta, children's writer, wildlife photographer and ...

Helen Ross writes supports independently published authors, as well as small press and independent publishers.

I think you all know by now my passion for showcasing talented Australian authors and illustrators, and in particular, independently published authors of great books.

So this week we meet an adventurous author who often risks her life to create books for children on endangered animals.

Jan Latta is a writer, traveler, wildlife photographer and book-designer/publisher. To create her True to Life Books Jan follows wild animals every day, taking photographs and writing about them in their natural habitats. ?Jan has played with chimps in Uganda and pandas in the mountains of China. She has walked with lions in Zambi, and has been charged by elephants in Amboseli and orangutans in Borneo. A cheetah came up to her in Nanyuki and she has held the horn of a rhino!

So, it was through good timing? that I was able to catch up with Jan before she heads off to China this week.

Welcome Jan. I know you have just returned from Taiwan and are off to China this week, so appreciate your time.

Thanks Helen for inviting me.

Could you tell us a little about yourself, and when your foray into photographing and writing about endangered animals began?

In 1994 I came face to face with a mountain gorilla, and the experience changed my life. When my guide said there were only 600 mountain gorillas left in the world I decided to create books for children on endangered animals. But first, I had to learn wildlife photography. Karl Ammann was my mentor. He said, do your research on every animal you want to photograph. One, this will keep you safe, and two, you will know the animal?s next move and be able to get a great photo.

Are there any writers or writers/photographers that have influenced your style?

Photographers Johnathan Scott, Karl Ammann and the wonderful David Attenborough

Could you tell us a little about your writing process? ie. how, generally speaking, does each story evolve?

I do research first, then write the story. This becomes the ?wish list? for the photographs I hope to take in the wild. But magic always happens and the animals provide the new copy. Then I rewrite the story to the photographs.

Some writers have a preferred writing schedule.? Do you?

I always work early in the morning so I don?t have any interruptions.

Do you have a favourite place to write?

I have a wonderful studio with a garden outside. My visitors are bush turkeys and a water dragon that look through the glass at me.

What inspires you to write and photograph animals in their natural environment?

To add to Q1, I want to write books on endangered animals for children because they will be the keepers of our endangered animals when they become adults. To inspire one child is such a thrill.

Of all the places you have travelled to, do you have a favourite place? If so, why?

The Masi Mara in Kenya is my favourite place. I live in a tent with no running water and I love the simplicity of it. Elephants eat leaves from the tree next to my tent and there is the sound of lions roaring close by. The sunsets are magic!

Every trip to Africa, China, Borneo, India, Sri Lanka is so expensive to take photographs and write about an animal in the wild. No publisher is going to give me $15,000 and hope I can get good material. So I need to finance myself, and publish the books for the sales revenue.

How did you first get started? ?ie. in relation to designing and publishing your first book.

Before I started designing the book I did some research on other books on endangered animals to see what was on the market. I wanted to keep the design simple with large clear type for children. The photographs tell the story. Printing the books was easy as I was living in Hong Kong at the time. When I returned to Sydney to live I found how difficult it was to get my books in shops. So, I found a distributor and that increased book sales.

Generally, speaking, how long does the process take? ie. from the beginning to the release of your books.

Ollie the Orangutan took only four months from start to printed books. Lennie the Leopard took 15 years because leopards are the most difficult animals to see in the wild. So it depends on the wild animal and how easy or difficult it is to photograph and research.

Did you encounter any obstacles when you first began publishing your books?

Yes. One book impossible, as no book shop wanted to take it. Then two and three books later I started to be accepted; then the series was sold as a set.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of publishing independently?

Advantages ? you own the company, you own the rights to sell overseas, and you receive the profit from book sales.

Disadvantages ? a self publisher is not welcome in stores because of the computer accounting system. (Strange but true) Stores like to buy through their selected distributors.

How do you market your books?

I market my books through schools, libraries and festivals in Australia. I?ve been a guest speaker at festivals in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing and I do school presentations in those cities.

What attributes do you feel are necessary to be a successful writer and publisher? eg. determination, patience, organisation, sales and marketing experience?..

All of those.

If you were offered a publishing contract with a mainstream publisher, would you accept it?

It would depend on the contract. The ABC asked me to write and design the Diary of a Wildlife Photographer book and it was a good experience.

Is there one person you can think of who has played a significant part in your career?

Susanne Gervay and her network group. Susanne gave me such valuable information and helped me.

What projects are you working on now?

I?ve converted all my books to a PDF for teachers to use on the smartboards. The books have additional pages with activities and a video so children can see the animals in action in the wild.

What words best describe you?

Energetic, adventurous and living life to the full.

Do you have any tips for writers about the writing process or the path to publishing?

Just do it. It?s the most rewarding challenge and such a thrill when you hold your first book.

Autoresponders With Punch

Auto-responders are a business?s best friend. Before we cover how to write fantastic auto-responders, here is a quick recap. What exactly is an auto-responder? Think about when you meet someone and you ask them ?How are you?? Most times the automatic response is ?Fine thanks?. People don?t even think ? the answer just automatically comes out.

Now ? transfer this to your computer. Most people are aware of the ?sorry I am holidays so can?t answer your email? type of autoresponder email. You know the person is not there answering their email ? the computer does it automatically. This is the most basic sort of autoresponder ? one email triggers one response.

But there is so much more you can do with a decent autoresponder package. When people contact you via email or over the net they want a fast answer. This is where an autoresponder program really comes into its own ? they become major productivity enhancement tools.

Let?s start with something simple.

Say, for example, someone enquires using a form on your website wanting a brochure. Imagine if your computer automatically received the email and then sent out the brochure electronically, without you having to do anything. They can also be set up to manage subscriptions and unsubscribes to newsletters, sending out appropriate confirmations as needed. They can be set up to deliver e-books or MP3 downloads on successful purchase over the net. They can deliver a broadcast email or newsletter to everyone on your list at the touch of a button.

One of the other great features is you can upload a series of follow up auto-responders to be delivered at pre-programmed times in the future. Most sales people give up after 2 or 3 follow up contacts.

Autoresponders will keep on following up no matter what (as long as you have programmed them into the sequence).

Write it once and then let it run over and over again.

OK ? enough about the features of autoresponders. Here?s my 10 step formula for creating auto-responders with PUNCH.

Auto responders are like mini direct mail letters ? you need to cover all of the regular elements of a long copy direct mail letter in a very succinct way. Everything should be covered in no more than 5 paragraphs!

1. Subject line ? your subject line is your headline. People will decide whether or not to open your email by your subject line. Make it interesting, intriguing and tempting.

2. Headline ? you need a strong headline to grab attention once they click on your email. Your headline must be consistent with your subject line and make people want to keep reading your email.

3. Body copy ? your copy needs to reflect a problem-solution approach. This means you hint at a problem and then quickly provide a possible solution. Focus on the benefits of your product or service, not the features.

4. Links ? you need to link through to your sales page quite high in the copy as well as at the end of the copy.

5. Proof/testimonials ? it helps to include a testimonial or some other proof.

6. Guarantee ? if you offer a money back guarantee then say so.

7. Call to action ? make sure you have a clear and compelling call to action. Tell people what to do ? this may be as simple as asking them to visit your website.

8. Create urgency ? people need to know why they need to act now.

9. Signature

10. PS ? PSs are generally always read. Make sure your PS restates the benefits, repeats the urgency or repeats the call to action.

Here?s an example of a typical autoresponder sequence promoting a new product or service.

1. Initial email in the format we have just discussed.

2. 4-7 days later ? restate your offer and reinforce the urgency of their action.

3. 4-7 days later ? reinforce the benefits, pile
on the testimonials and perhaps offer added bonuses. Combine this with a reminder of the deadline or other reason they need to act today.

4. If they still don?t buy, then you could ask for feedback on the offer at this stage.

5. Keep the person on your email list and regularly keep them updated with newsletters and other broadcasts.

Co-GMing and Inheritance

Hello there,

Let me first say that I am a relative newcomer to this community having been a part of it for less than two months so I haven't had time to fully grasp how RP's are run on this site. However I come from a different RP community which although recently has burnt out, had a well-developed and functioning system for GMing.

If an RP can be visualized as a vehicle then we can suppose that the RP'ers are the engine that drives it forward. The body is the environment constructed by the GM and further manipulated by the players. The transmission and motive systems are the actions that the RP'ers pursue within the game environment. The fuel of this vehicle is imagination and determination both in equal parts. The electronics/lighting/control features is/are composed of the collective degree of discipline displayed by the players and the GM. When every part is in harmony, the vehicle functions as a well-oiled machine. There's one thing missing from this picture though: the driver. The driver is, of course, the GM. It is the GM's responsibility to manage the vehicle, point it in the right direction and apply throttle and brakes when necessary. They are the prime authority within an RP; they direct all and answer to none. But there is a problem...

You see, GM's are human beings, living creatures that have a life outside of the RP community and as you all know life can throw some serious curve balls at you. Or maybe its just that life for said GM might be on the edge, everything is very tightly timed and the slightest disruption will trigger a domino effect of scheduling collapse. My old community recognized this and also recognized that players who were heavily invested in an RP lose out when the GM is unable to fulfill his or her duties for whatever reason. To this end the OOC and IM systems of the website were utilized heavily in order to keep the RP'ers informed of any delays, dead zones, etc. Yet we found out that wasn't enough because there were times when a GM had to step down from his or her position as the driver of the RP permanently. Well what now? That vehicle has no driver to control it, what happens? Well it goes nowhere. What do you do in this situation? Well you may have had the foresight to have somebody ride shotgun with you: the co-GM.

The Co-GM will act just like a normal RP'er (and may be given some special permissions due to their authority) but unlike other RP'ers they will be informed of the GM's decision making before it hits the activity board. This is to keep the Co-GM informed of the desired direction of the RP, allows them to feel the flow of the creative dynamo and be ready to take the helm in the event that the first GM cannot continue for an extended period of time, or even just for a short duration. To this end this means that the Co-GM must possess formidable discipline as they are sworn to secrecy and must act as if they know nothing, or at the very least refrain from acting upon the information they are granted.

Then of course there is the unthinkable: what if both the GM and Co-GM are unable to fulfill their obligations for whatever reason? Who then is left to take command? Well ideally an RP'er will volunteer to take the helm and after being equipped with the information the GM and Co-GM had in their possession that player would know what to do. But reality is rarely ideal and power-trips happen. So then there must be a system of 'inheritance' established. The GM and Co-GM observe the actions of the players and analyze their capacity to follow and lead. This criteria will of course vary from RP to RP but the principle mechanics are the same, a player slated for inheritance must have a proper combination of discipline, creativity and perseverance. Inheritance is very "hit or miss", there is no science to selecting a player to inherit control of the RP and even if a player appears to be the perfect candidate it is ultimately up to them to decide if they want to grab the reins of command. This system was in it's experimental stages when my old RP community began to die off.

Whether or not a Co-GM or inheritance exists within an RP communication is crucial and having been a Co-GM myself before I made it my duty to keep players informed of developments, time tables and other insensitive material. This went a long way to stimulating interest in those RP's and I feel that the same methods can be applied here. I plan on starting my own RP sometime within the next few months and I will be utilizing these methods in order to maintain the integrity of the RP.

So then. Opinions? Similar experiences? Recommendations? Admonishments (be reasonable please)?
